SlyDog's '82 GL1100 restoration project - MAKE IT NAKED!!

#1

Post by SlyDogJeff77 »

OK so this is a 1982 Honda Goldwing GL1100 Standard.
purchased by my father about 6-8 years ago. got parked about 4-5 years ago outside in Long Island.
Brought it up to Albany, NY last week hoping to get up to Americade, Lake George, NY with it but that was not in the cards. Too much work needs to be done.
So this is the starting picture. I only took one because at the time I didn't even know about this web site and the world I was about to get into!

So i took it out for a ride, and it was rough, didn't want to idle nicely, was smoking like crazy.
It would smoke more from the left side, then after about 5 mins it stopped and started smoking more from the ride side.
Then after about 10 mins the white smoke stopped and it started smoking blue.. and oh yea.. SPEWING FUEL out the bottom of the exhaust!
Yea I know.. floaters are stuck.. or worse.. total carb rebuild.

OK so now it's parked in my garage and I have started to dismantle. I found all the threads on rebuilding carbs and Randakk's kit and all that is great. But then I found this site and started looking at the nakedness and got all giddy!!
I WANT TO GET RIDE OF THE FAIRINGS and the SADDLE BAGS and the TRUNK!! all of that nonsense!
I want to lighten up this beast. I don't need any storage. I don't want all that weight on the front at all!
The radio doesn't work, the crappy cb that was after market doesn't work.... fairing.. GONE..
i want to make it look like the fatboy arnold rode in T2! lol
I've got a huge engine in here and I want to show it off! So let's go.. here are a few pics of day one of dismantle.

as you can see, it's kind of dirty and pretty rusty.. i still need to get the false tank off and the fairing mounts.
I got the trunk off (turns out my father had a fiberglass guy make him a new new bottom of the trunk) and it was actually clamped down to the trunk rack with hose clamps.. :)
I got the saddle bags off and the wires were not ORIGINAL. It appears as if some previous owner had some additional lights and the rear wiring harness has been botched! splices everywhere.
and what's with all those wires under that weight on the front forks?

Looks like you're starting with an '82 Interstate, not a standard.

That don't mean nothin' though. Anybody can go naked!

It's late. I have a ton more pictures but I'll upload them tomorrow.
What makes you say this looks like an interstate? I don't have any of the air shock controls on the tank, none of the advanced radio with built in cb or the extra trims.

this is where i want to get to, but eventually with the straight bars like some of the "bulldogs" i have seen.
Which brings up a simple question. Can you tell me what is the difference between a "Bulldog", "Cafe" & a "bobber"?

I just want it as simple as possible.
I need to know what I need to get for headlight & turn signal mounts as well as the headlight and turn signals them selves.
I saw some LED turn signals. I want to keep it small and minimal.
As it is right now I have one photo to show everyone. I have oil up on the bottom of the air filter. So I know i need to rebuild the carb or get a new one. I might just buy a new one if i can find it for the same price as Randakk's rebuild kit. :)

I'm trying to go as cheap as possible...

I did the same thing Jeff, saw all the possibilities and, personally, how attractive the cut down, bare bones versions are.
I'm bobbing my 76 gl1000, with a couple hints of cafe.
I don't know what a "bulldog" is, and have a vague understanding of cafe racers
Bobbers are pretty simple in theory though.. they have only the necessities. They're a throwback to the bikes of the 50s-60s
So of course any luggage is removed, and fenders are often at least chopped, if not removed
Signal lights are often removed, stock seats are cut down or swapped out. bikes are typically black, minimal chrome and metal showing..
And I think I'm correct in saying many had ape hangers
a lot I'm missing but thats a feel

Cafe racers are also pretty simplistic, but many have a small fairing just around the headlight, and I believe drag bars are common
I don't know much about them though

Just my take on it, no one hang me if I'm wrong
It looks better this way

Here is a quick view of where i was leaking fuel.
This is why I thought the floats were stuck open or something.
I went through 5 gallons of gas in about 15-20 miles.

OK so now here is a clear view without those Fairing Mounts.
So here is a quick question. I know these 2 photos aren't great.
But My neutral light doesn't come on.
I know the switch is someplace in the front but everyone is telling me to check the connection from the switch to the dash.
Where should I be looking for a disconnected wire?

Next question. I've seen a few bobbers and cafe pictures of this bike.

Here is a shot of the bottom of the radiator (which i found was BONE DRY and i shouldn't have been riding at all)
I've seen a few bike that have some kind air scoops on either side and on the bottom of the radiator to direct the air INTO / TOWARDS the radiator. Are these for show or are they functional? Is it optional or manditory to keep the bike cool?
also this might be a good photo to show exactly where the neutral switch is (inside the engine?)

Ignore that relay that's hanging. Thats for my air horns. :)

also a good time to point out the oxidation on the Timeing Belt Covers. I still have to yank out the radiator and change them.
