Compression test results?

#1

Post by bobted1 »

Hi,
I am a new 76 GL1000 owner and new to this group. I apologise in advance if this subject has been covered before.
My Goldwing idles rough and backfires and misfires, it all over the place at the minute. I have tried setting the timing with new points fitted and balancing the carbs but so far this has had little effect.
I did a compression test today, the engine was hot, the choke off and throttle wound full on as i spun the engine and tested each cylinder. All four cylinders read exactly the same which is good, but if you believe the book the 95psi reading I got was low??
The book says 125-135 psi??
I believe the engine has just been rebuilt with new piston rings amoung other things before I bought it.
Is 95 psi low? If so what do you think the prob could be?
Also when trying to balance the carbs the readings I was getting from the vacuum gauges were slightly low, 0.2 bar (book recommends 02.8 bar) does this sound right to you?
Any help will be greatly received :-)
Regards, Bobted1

How many miles since the rebuild? If very few miles and the rings may not be properly seated causing what appears to be low readings.

There is a tendency to see low readings on bikes that have sat for a long while. Rings stick, Rust forms in the cylinders. Seems a few miles riding generally gets the compression readings back up where they belong.

It could be that your carb slides are sticking.Might account for the low readings. The mention of backfiring and missing leads me to think dirty carbs. Idle jets generally plug first. They have the smallest holes.
Theres a race of men who dont fit in
A race that can't stand still
So they break the hearts of kith and kin
and roam the world at will
