Baking Soda works
perhaps not as well as laundry soda but well enough.
Also, for those that don't want to use a battery charger, try a DC power supply. I happen to have dozens of these hanging around from various computer peripherals over the years. Tip: pick a unit with relatively low amperage (no more than 1 or two amps). The one I used was only rated at 600 ma and worked just fine.
