Well, it's been a while since I posted anything here.

I was going to wait to post these but I'm so over-the-moon with what arrived yesterday that I just gotta tell someone :P

Dr. Crippin sent me two big boxes of body parts! :-D (kind of in-joke)

This was what they held;

Image

The decals on the side panels came all the way from Canada and are superb. The first replacement ones were waterslide which were so thin they disintegrated as I tried to put them on.

Image

Had a hell of a job getting the tape to do the striping. The first lot bought turned out to be just printed lines on clear vinyl. Don't ask me how they were supposed to be used, but there was no way that rubbish was going on this bike!

Image

I managed to get tape eventually; not the best but it was proving impossible to get the quality stuff I wanted. This did an acceptable if not perfect job.

Image

This colour is so difficult to photograph
The pics keep coming out almost a polycromatic blue, so I've had to play about with various filters to get it showing near enough the right colour.

Now the BIG THANK YOU. Stand up Alleykat. You are a star!

He took a set of fairly scabby panels and turned them into something you would not know from new. Amazing piece of work!

Bill, I can't thank you enough respekt2 action1 action1

When you do photos, toss a gray card in there. (You can get them at any photography supply store) Then in Photoshop or whatever editing software you're using, sample the gray card and tune the RGB channels to equal eachother. (R will be the same as G and B)

That will neutralize your photo regardless of the light source or other influences. Then all you have to do is adjust brightness/contrast.

Those are beautiful! Wow! We knew the guy could do some nice work but those panels are now over the top. Nice job on the finishing up bits too.

John mate, really glad you like them... Here's a few shots, not P'shop tweaked and the colours don't seem right. Weird. Hope everyone's well anyway, cheers y'all :)

'best laid plans o' mice and men aft gang awry! (Its Burns night on Friday!)

Been stuck for cash this last while which is why there has been nothing posted here.

Anyway, my plan to do the 18" wheels thing has hit the financial buffers.
It was going to cost me aprox £410 plus the tyres and tubes at £175, with me doing the building.

Terrifying!!!! Shocked Shocked

Shame cos I really wanted the spokes but maybe I'll get them done later.

Scored a beautiful pair of 79 Comstars with hardly a mark on them for £60 the pair complete with ALL 3 almost new discs.
Oh yeah, got the tubes as well!

These came off a bike that had only 20K on it. Bearings all seem good and they have polished up a treat.

Is that a result or what? Laughing Laughing Laughing

So, a new pair of BT45s are now on -100/90 front and 130/90 rear.

Progress at Last :-D

I've also done the carb overhaul but still waiting for the slow air jets jets that were ordered before Christmas!

I had noticed a hairline crack in the white button on a couple of them, so these buttons have been epoxied up and prettied up with the kits from Ross at Retroride. They look real good now; much better than new :!:

Camera bust again so no pics. I'll do some when it comes back.

Yeah, they sure are!

Bill did a fantastic job; the panels I gave him were really a mess. The top panel was dented around the lock and rusty underneath around the fuel gauge bracket. The rest of them had been hand painted and the paint was all flakey and horrible so he had his work cut out.

The colour is a standard Honda Auto one. It's not quite the same blue/green but it's damn near! And at least I know I can get more if it needs a touch-up!

Here goes after another long break in posting what little progress has been made, not made any easier by my camera acquiring a bad case of 'young daughter syndrome' -
( You know the thing; 'Dad, did the lens always flop about like this?').

Well, first off, once I'd cleaned up my super cheap Comstars which came up looking almost like new I decided that the discs needed some nice new holes to go along with the other brake mods.

Image

Image

Solid six hours marking out and drilling! Them divils is tuff stuff :!:

So the chassis is almost finished now, just waiting for a 79 speed drive to arrive so the front wheel can go in.

The rear end is finished.

Image

New saddle, new Hagons, New BT45s, new grab rail, Bill's great paint job!
It's getting there.

Time to start on the engine :-?

I know a lot of you will think that's doing things ass-backwards to do the chassis first but my thinking was that engine parts were more likely to be available than anything else.

Well, I guess I knew what I was in for with the original 76 motor just by the state of the rest of the bike.

Image

Pulled the screen first. Loads of muck plus bits of seal and O ring.

Pulled the clutch. Thats the chewed clutch nut you see there!

The belled washer was totally missing!

The clutch centre has had the stops that locate the tabbed washer broken off.

The shock absorber plate had its stupid brass rivets sheared so that the spring steel strips had come out and damaged the clutch basket.
Brass rivets holding spring steel!!! What the hell kind of engineering is that?

The neutral switch that I knew was bad was solidly seized into the case. Nothing would move it. ( I eventually got it out once I had split the cases and removed the gear train, by hammering it out. Yup, it was that solid!)

Split the cases. As I pulled the left side off bits of piston ring fell out of number two piston :(

Number four piston has marks on the skirt where someone has let it drop onto the gear train previously!

Stator wires where they come through the case had the insulation damaged on all three. PO had simply squirted silicon sealer around them  . Unbelievable!!!

Primary chain totally done in.

The two top engine mountings where the shroud goes are toast.

But, joy of joys, the crankshaft seems to be OK apart from some condensation staining on the flywheel.

Oh yeah, the heads. Left side 371 cam, right side 431 cam; 371 auto advance with buggered springs.

The carbs incidently were '75 755As jetted as for a '79 :-?

How the hell did this thing ever manage to run.

The plan was to fit the other 79 engine I have with the 76 crank, refurb the heads as per 75-76 ( got new cam on the way) and completely rebuild it.
The carbs have been totally overhauled and rejetted.

But I think now in view of the length of time it's taking I'll just do the heads, redo the 79 crank timing marks, change the belts and anything else obvious and stick it in to get some mileage out of it for this summer.
I can get a set of cases and take the time to do a proper rebuild of the 76 that way.

FANTASTIC looking wheels and brake rotors! Panels are the cat's meow! However, I don't envy you the task that lays ahead with the motor. :(

I have some 76 engine stuff, I don't know if the cost of shipping would kill the idea though.
