I got away from the OEM filters years ago, but I don't think there's a "direction" for them inside the filter cover. it IS pretty imperative to make sure the spring (5 on the diagram) and the spring washer (4) are still in there. usually the washer was lost somewhere/somehow through the years.
I use a spin-on adapter amazingly machined by one of our members. saves a lot of time and hassle when you're crawling around on your knees and maybe your back.

These are a simple filter with no check valve. It should not matter which direction it goes in.

I was following along with the steps but where they have listed as a 17mm bolt for the oil filter mine is a 12mm. I'm wondering if this is a different setup from others because I used a lot of force to try and remove it but it isn't bulging. It isn't reverse thread is it? The 12mm fits snug

Some covers have the 12mm bolt, and some have the 17mm bolt. If you have the 12mm, try and upgrade to the 17mm. Also put a little oil on the large O ring when you install the cover, and don't over tighten it.
Will make it easier next time
