Hate my truck

Not really but getting close!!

Last year the right side exhaust manifold sheared off a bolt and I had to tear it down and replace them on that side. Not a fun job but I got it done. I should have taken the time then to do the Driver side but I did not.

So for the last month or so the drivers side is ticking. I tore into it today and 3 hours later finally got the manifold off. Seems like everything fought me. This side has 2 that are sheared and both are the back ones. Actually kind of lucky as the back ones have the best access.

Last year when I did this I just welded nuts to the broke studs and backed them out. Not working so good this time. The Bolt is seized and every nut I weld on just twists off eventually. Plus there is no room to wear a welding helmet. Been closing my eyes but I can already feel the telltale signs that it is going to be a very bad night.

It is sheared slightly below the surface. No room in there for a drill. May have to go buy a flex drive and try that. Hardened bolts so no sure that will work either.

Feel for you on that one. One thing is for sure, you are committed now. If you don't get it back together this weekend, you'll be riding in the cold come Monday.

No pressure...

I haven't had this issue (although its common) on my 2014 Laramie but I'm glad I purchased the lifetime bumper to bumper warranty when I bought the truck. At the time I figured if I ever had any problems with either the nav/radio unit or transmission that would more than pay for the cost of the warranty. So far I haven't had any issues with the truck whatsoever.

Sorry for your pain there Steve.

Yea this seems to be associated with mileage or age or heat cycles or something. Both of mine happened over 100,000 miles and upwards of 8 years. Aluminum Heads and Cast Iron manifolds expanding and contracting at different rates is the common explanation.

Pouring rain at the moment. Maybe play with it some more in a few hours. May let it sit a day and put my 1800 back together for the incoming nice weather action1 action1 action1

Removing fender-well and front tire give you any better access?
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

have you tried letting the bolt cool after you weld the nut on, then heating the head up around the bolt. the aluminum would heat up and expand faster then the bolt. Maybe enough to break it free.
Hopefully the threads remain intact.

All done. Just needed to talk nice to it some. Watched a guy on youtube and he was moving them very small amounts after welding on the nut. Back and forth just a few hairs at first, and that seemed to do the trick.

She is all back together, nice and quiet now :-D

the busted ones are on the left
