The word anachronism carries a further connotation that is interesting. Out of place. As in vapor trails that crop up in the sky in old western movies.

So very sorry I’m late to post. It’s been 8 whole days since the last post and I know I risk being accused of reviving an old thread. I guess I need to get some sort of instant 24/7 alert on every device I own so I can keep up with this internet blogging thing better.

My daughter (in grad school now) is very intelligent. When she was in middle school, she realized I didn’t know many of the facts she was learning in school and therefore concluded she was smarter than her old man. I told her she was indeed very intelligent, perhaps even more intelligent than me, but not smarter. This surprised her so I told her I define “smart” as the combination of intelligence and wisdom. Wisdom is usually gained through the experience of actually doing something useful. I told her the world was full of very intelligent people who have no wisdom or common sense and who have never accomplished a thing. Those people aren’t very smart. I hope she listened.

The accumulation of useless facts is nothing more than entertainment. And just because you have more useless facts than I do doesn’t in some way make you a superior intellect. I’m preaching to myself here. I’ve learned so much on this site, but unless I get out in the shop and actually do something with it I’m no better!

Note to self: This weekend, I think I'll finally get started on that tank de-rusting project I’ve been researching on the internet for the last two months!!

Good point, and very astute! I think the classic distinction is, knowledge is knowing things, wisdom is is knowing what to do with what you know.

My daughter was the same way. When she graduated university and entered the workforce, she kept telling me that us old farts should retire and get out of her way. She justified this by saying that she had graduated university. Left her with these thoughts and some 3/4 years later after having been out in the work world, she confided in me that us old farts knew stuff, and were quite useful - knowledge and wisdom as you mention. She still denies this when I mention it She was also one of the teenage crowd that should have left home when they knew everything, similar to her Dad at that age. Cheers

Of course, they dont get it. But I have no doubt, eventually they will.

LOL! Yes, along with our late teens attitude of invincability physically comes the belief in our superiority mentally. I'm convinced they're linked, wired into us, part and parcel of what nature gave us to knock around in our early years, learning the hard way, and surviving to ultimately start having wisdom and understanding. The bad side of being uber-resilient and as yet unaware of our own astonishing frailties (at every level) is arrogance. But this levels out as maturity (not just physical but also spiritual) comes. Hopefully. Most of the time. How great it would be to be 19 and as humble and wise as 70. But it's not possible. It's not nature's way.

as I said.... only really good grapes make fine wine.... I know gord…. there are good grapes there
