Folks are intimidated by carburetor synchronization and seem to deliberately avoid it. Yet well-synced engines are much more pleasant and Gold Wings are among the easiest of carb sets to sync. Try an early V4 or a six-cylinder CBX1000. Those are a challenge! Even so, the CBX1000 doesn't require 30 minutes as I hear folks saying they spend doing the job on their Gold Wings. 1 If syncing really takes that long, chances are good when the job is done the carbs very likely will *not* be synchronized, and the gauges will act as if possessed, because the engine will be so hot by that time, the procedure will not work. An overheated engine will not sync. 2

The goal of carburetor synchronization
Let's begin at the beginning. What does carburetor synchronization do? What's it for? Synchronization accomplishes just one thing: a smooth, steady idle. That in turn results in the secondary benefit of a satisfyingly crisp throttle response. That's it. Sync has absolutely nothing to do with open-throttle performance. 3

The act of carburetor synchronization
Think about this one thing. After your carbs are perfectly synced, why would they ever need syncing again? Because of wear in the carb linkage? Nope. Why then? Because of gradual changes in the engine. Absorb that fact. The throttles are perfectly synced, yet the engine 3,000 miles later "says" they aren't. Here's the deal: synchronization is NOT merely aligning the individual throttles. It's true that when the carburetors are statically synchronized on the workbench, the throttles are perfectly aligned, exactly matched. But when doing a running sync we are syncing vacuum levels, which approximates airflow, not the position of each throttle plate, and airflow is determined by much more than mere throttle position. If some cylinders for example have 20 psi less compression or slightly different ignition timing, then to compensate, those cylinders' throttles, though the gauges don't show it and read all the same, will actually have been made slightly out of mechanical sync in the process of achieving perfect gauge airflow readings. Make sense? The throttles don't have to be perfectly matched to achieve exactly the same airflow, and fairly often they must actually *not* be. 4 This also explains why an overheated engine won't sync. Temperature affects air density which affects airflow.

Wire?
When doing a bench sync, don't rub wire under the throttle plates. Those parts were never available separately and you have just ruined your carburetors. I replace a handful of throttle plates each year due to ill-advised manhandling. The plates are exquisitely machined around their circumference. Rubbing wire on that edge puts a notch in it that introduces air where it shouldn't be. 5

How to synchronize carburetors
Time to grab the tools. First, the architecture, with the viewing perspective that of the operator. The screw between the right two carburetors (1&3) synchronizes those two carburetors. The screw between the left two (2&4) does those two. The third screw, the one hiding in the lower left corner of the carb set, syncs the two banks -- right vs. left -- to each other. 6 A really simple system.

This is important. The sync screw is not a micrometer. You know, X amount of turn equals Y amount of change on the vacuum gauge. Uh uh. Doesn't work that way. The Wing's sync system is really pretty crude. What with plastic bushings, springs everywhere, flexy parts and fairly loose tolerances, syncing carbs is pretty fiddly. It helps to acquire a bit of a "feel" for this task. Finesse is the word of the day in regard to syncing.

So here's the technique career techs use. Ready? Six things. 1) We never watch the gauge as we turn the screw, 2) we never turn the screw more than one-sixteenth turn (i.e. just perceptible) at a time, 3) we never loosen the locknut (GL1000 and GL1100) more than required to just barely be able to turn the screw, 4) we tighten the locknut only very very gently snugged, 5) we always "blip" the throttle to settle the loosey-goosey linkage, 6) and only after all these steps do we look at the gauge. And a seventh was mentioned earlier: don't let the engine overheat. This is the procedure that has worked for me for more than twice as long as most of today's mechanics have been alive. And let's see, in more than 46 years at it, 20,000 syncs, maybe? Let me break these six steps down for you.

1) Don't watch the gauge. Why? If you try to dial the adjustment while watching the gauge, you'll just be frustrated because you'll overshoot each time. Believe me, when you snug the locknut (GL1000 and GL1100) on a perfect gauge reading the reading will move, and it will move again when you blip the throttle. Count on it. Just the way it is. So, initially look at the gauge ONLY until you know you're turning the screw the right direction, then look away. Turn the screw a smidge, then snug, blip, and lastly, look. 7

2) The smidge. The fact is, the tiniest adjustment is amplifed by a power of three or more. Imagine that all the linkage under your hands is made of rubber. It's not of course, but this mental picture will help. Never turn the screw more than 1/16 turn. Unless of course one gauge is showing five increments different from the rest. Use common sense. But once they're within a few increments, 1/16 is the correct amount. No more. 8

3) The locknut. Loosen the locknut (GL1000 and GL1100) only enough to allow movement of the screw, i.e. not quite fully loose. Trust me, this works, though it may be counterintuitive. A pro uses two hands, one turns the screw just that smidge while the other holds the almost-but-not-quite-loosened nut stationary. Then the nut is gently snugged, while the screw is held motionless. To see a pro do this, well, it looks kinda artful. :-) Very fluid. Never leave the nut completely loose during syncing.

4) Snug. Tighten the locknut only snug. It must be snugged before you can consider the actual adjustment of the screw complete. Believe this one fact and you're halfway to being professional. And only snug, no more. It's not going anywhere. Don't reef on it.

5) Blip. Blipping the throttle is mandatory after each touch of the tool to the sync adjuster. The springs and whatnot make this necessary. Don't skip it.

6) Read. Only after all these steps do you take a reading of the gauge. Only after the slight nut loosen, 1/16 turn, snug and blip. Only then is the gauge looked at because only then is it indicating reality.

This is the pro way. The temptation is strong to shortcut this process, but the end result of doing so will be a much longer time reaching perfect synchronization, if you ever do. Not to mention a ton of frustration. And it takes longer to describe it than to do it. A pro does the whole Wing carb set in less than 5 minutes to a spec of under 1/10 of one increment. Yes, I said 5 minutes. Max. Will it take you longer? Most likely. So use a fan.

Synchronization does not stand alone
A few more tips about synchronizing carburetors. First, you must -- MUST -- have everything else perfect before synchronizing your carburetors. Not doing so is like putting the icing on the cake before it's done baking. Despite the great icing, you have a lousy cake. The engine will not be right. 9 Second, hopefully you have at least 150 psi compression. If 130 to 140, then loosen your valve clearances to 0.006" and you will likely reach 150 just from that by itself. No downside to it either. If compression never gets to 150, well, don't expect too much from any tuning, including carburetor synchronization. Your engine needs work. Third, ignition timing. Ignition timing is the most involved and most difficult tuning task you will ever do on a GL1000. And it has to be perfect. I tell all my customers -- spend all your energy, all your resources, getting this most important of all adjustments as right as you can get it. It will do more than just pay dividends, it will astonish you with its effect. 8 Fourth and finally, if you have resin built up in your carburetor's circuits from infrequent riding, this is a problem. Syncing won't make up for dirty carbs.

Synchronization measuring tools
Let's talk about sync gauges. The traditional mercury sticks are still available despite mercury being a biohazard. They're trouble in other ways too. More difficult to store, not as easily damped, can be difficult to read, the mercury columns absorb water, and the plastic tubes eventually craze to the point of becoming opaque. And replacement mercury is getting hard to find, too. So not the best choice. There are other liquid column types as well. And there are metal ball and metal rod gauges. The rod type is probably the most popular right now, with the brand name being Carbtune. Then there are electronic gauges, both LED and LCD. These were my favorite when I taught mechanics but I didn't have to buy them -- they're pretty expensive. Lastly, there are still good old mechanical pressure gauges. Nothing wrong with mechanical gauges, nothing at all -- as long as each gauge has a calibration screw on its face. That's the only kind of mechanical gauge system worth having, and it's what I still use. Mine are Marsh, a high quality U.S. gauge manufacturer and the maker of the original 1969 factory Honda sync gauge set. All the different types are pretty much equal. The only real difference is how well they're damped.

Not long ago a friend loaned me his motorcycle so I could create a video. A few days after getting it back to him he called me. "What did you do to my bike?", he asked. Oh oh, I thought. What did I mess up? He said, "It's never run this good." "Well, all I did was sync the carbs. It made that much difference, huh?" He was genuinely pleased, not to mention surprised. He had had a considerable amount of work done on the bike and apparently it had never been adjusted so well. 10

I hope this is useful. Syncing carbs on the Gold Wing is not intuitive, but it's not really all that difficult either. And it's not an option if you want the full experience the machine is designed to deliver. I suspect that those who gravitate toward single-carb conversions do so out of disillusionment with how demanding the stock carburetors can be, and I get that. (Becoming familiar with Sta-Bil will relieve 90 percent of this. "Take 2 ounces and call me in the morning.") But many on this forum know firsthand that the stock setup properly and carefully adjusted is unequaled by any alternative carburetor in smoothness, acceleration and satisfying performance. Let me encourage you to resolve to do this thing right, and let that bike really shine!

Notes:
1 The CBX1000 has five sync adjusters buried so deeply in the carb set that one of them is over a foot below the frame rail and has to be found by feel. And syncing still doesn't take more than 10 minutes, ever.

2 This is something every beginning mechanic learns. When the engine overheats the intake pressures -- thus the measuring gauges -- become unstable and the mechanic loses control of the process, not to mention his sanity.

3 Of course, idle and throttle response are important enough by themselves. On larger displacement bikes especially, whose operation regardless of gear position or throttle opening is mostly dependent on the idle jet, idle and response characteristics are everything, the holy grail. The finishing touch on an engine tune. There have often been attempts to sync carbs at various open-throttle positions, but I know of only one model bike on which that is a fruitful endeavor. As a rule, carb linkage just doesn't allow that to work. You can sync at idle or you can sync at some open throttle position, but you can't do both. Idle is the important thing.

4 Fuel injection throttles present a good illustration. The throttles on many modern bikes are built in rigid fixed alignment. No adjusters. Yet the cylinders still require syncing. They're synced by means of adjustable air bleeds that increase or decrease the total airflow through the intake port.

5 The wire trick needs to be permanently retired. It originated in pushrod Brit bike manuals and applied only to those bikes' mechanical slide type carburetors. It wasn't so hot a method even for those carbs, though at least it didn't tear them up like it does when used on CVs.

6 Note that there is no "master" carburetor. The idea of a master carburetor has merit on only a very small number of motorcycle models. The Wing is not one of them.

7 I can't emphasize this enough. If you watch the gauge while turning the screw, you'll land in the insane asylum before you land in syncing nirvana. Like all pros I thought this was obvious until I read so many postings on forums about doing this strange thing.

8 Snugging the locknut each time the screw is moved has to be drilled into your mind as inextricably linked to turning the screw. Never one without the other. It's really one step, not two, in the sense that you must not consider the adjustment complete until the nut is snugged.

9 I know that this late in history everyone is thought to agree with this, but I see little evidence of that everywhere I look. Syncing carbs is never to be something done in isolation; by itself. Our bikes' owner's manuals give just 3,000 miles as the intervals at which valves, ignition and carbs are to be checked and if necessary adjusted. If every year or two you're suddenly thinking you should sync your carbs you're going about it all wrong. This is surely one more reason you're having difficulty. Syncing is part of a maintenance triad and was never meant to be a solitary adjustment.

10 The bike was a CBX1000. Not the most difficult to sync (that would be the Honda V4) but like most multis it responds well to careful synchronization.

I have three 5 gallon gas cans. When they are empty, I put Sta-Bil in each and take them to the station that carries 100% 87 octane. My carbuerated engines get only this (well the 2 strokes get added 2-stroke oil).
