Fogive my added info about compression engines, I am no no way an expert. A couple of factoids.
SI engines run only on a vary narrow f/a band.
While CI engines can run on a much wider band of a/f ratios. SI initiates usually by a single spark, where in CI the "charge" can initiate almost anywhere within the charge and in a multiplicity of locations. Charge: the a/f mixture.
Nonturbo charged SI engines have power losses during intake/exh, mostly from pulling against subatmospheric pressure ( nagative).
Naturally aspirated CI engines have much reduced pumping losses since the intake air is at atmospheric pressure or above.
Turbo charged CI engines are the most efficient because the air is pushed in and thus aids the intake stroke thus vastly reducing pumping losses.
Ok, that's about all I can say about CI combustion.
