Fuel flow diagrams help with understanding how the Solex carbs work. The 34 is different from the 30, but not by much.

Thought I would check back in and give an update. I sent the 34PICT-3 carb back and got a 30PICT-1. Installed it and the bike cranks and runs. I even have it idling although it is pretty rough. So, I am going to take it back off and clean/blow it out and put in the size jets that ob1quixote has in his and see how that goes. Just waiting for the jets to come in. So, progress has been made. Thanks for everyone's comments and advice. More as it develops. Benny

Just for your knowledge, I'm as just above sea level. My motor is tight, getting 180 lbs of compression on all 4 cylinders. Might want to keep that in mind, your best result could be something different.

I installed the 30 PICT-1 on the bike and it fired right up and I was able to get it to idle but not really well. I set the idle speed to about 1100-1200 rpm and made the adjustment to get the best idle. However, it doesn't settle into a smooth idle but kind of oscillates up & down between 1050 & 1300 rpm. What would be the cause of this? Jets maybe? I have no clue what size jets are in it. They aren't marked. Any pointers would be appreciated. Benny

Did you set the idle by adjusting the 2 carb "jet screws" on the side? or the choke knock down screw?

The 30 PICT-1 only has one screw. It is simpler than the PICT-3. After reading some of the stuff on the samba.com I went with it. I am going to pull it off and clean it and blow it out. I’ll probably wait for the jets I ordered to come in but that will probably be early August.

Any idea if there is a way to tell what size a jet is that isn't marked? Is there a tool to figure it out? None of the jets in this Chinese carb are marked. Benny

There is. You should be able to find them on Amazon or ebay, or a local supplier to machinests. Search for pin gauge or jet gauge. You might get a local shop to use their gauges to tell you what you have.

I have some jets now. I am rusty on idle characteristics. If the bike is has sort of an oscillating idle, not a steady speed. Would that generally indicate a lean mixture? If so then I should go up on the idle jet size, yes?

Your 30 is very different from my 30, enough that I don't know what to suggest.

Ran into a friend who took video on my first interstate trip. This was when I was running the 34, switched later to a 30.
34 didnt like altitude changes, 30 ended up being "set it and forget it"
