But I'm the new guy.

I have a vw with an opposed 4 motor that runs off a single carb and I've seen it done on this bikes on line. I know it would be easier not to have to sink stock carbs. I'd like to get everyone's take on this topic and reasons if I could.

Thanks again...Clutch

Ive seen a few post on this as well but no experience of my own. I found a good deal on a 4-1 plenum (all cast) but Im not sure about running it. alot of people seem to have tuning issues

Been done, but
i think it has more to do with not understanding the stock carbs. I don't recall any posts showing a vast improvement in performance

Of course there's been a ton of discussions about all kinds of different carb setups, and it really comes down to what you want. Take a look in the subforum 'Unique carburetion' under the 'Underground Customizing' forum for a good taste of what's been done...

Most guys that want an improved VW go with dual Webbers. Same here. The flat fours with a single have their own set of problems, one of which is a fairly long run from carb to cylinder. Go to classicgoldwings if you want info, they're happy to give it, and if you do it, you get you own badge by your name. You don't get 72 virgins, but close.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I just feel its hard beat one carb per cyl., equal length runners, and the ability to adjust individual carbs to match the needs of each cyl. Which can be differfent

I have a 76 wing. I'm also not looking for a race bike. I have a CBR for that. I'm thinking of doing it for ease of maintenance and reliability. I know 4 carbs are better for performance. VW guys will tell you that more carbs are better for performance but single carb is ease of maintenance and reliability. 1 cars instead of 4 for maintenance and you don't have to worry about sinking them.

Ok, again go to the unique carb section http://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=47 . No need to go to another site. We have quite a few members here that have done single carb and other things too.

GL1000 single carb info

#14

Post by ClutchnThrottle1305 »

I have been reading a lot in this section of unique carbs. But have not scene anyone with "Thee Hot Set Up". Many opinions but no straight up, this is it. Found one guy who will swear by and set up for this GL 1100, but no one on the GL1000. So my question is, at this point is there any new info. I know I can make an intake manifold no problem. Still trying to find the right carb to buy.

Thanks...Clutch

People have used Pict's, Solexes, Webers, 4 barrel Hollys, and maybe others. CaptainMidnight made a lot of claims regarding his conversion kits but I never saw any dyno numbers on either his, or any other single conversions.
If I was to do one I'd pick something highly adjustable/tuneable (like a Weber) and that also had good parts availability for jets and air correctors. I'd also want a dyno run to find out what the exhaust gases looked like. If it ran well, then knowing the torque and HP numbers would be points of information, but the exhaust gas story would be something I think would be solid useable info to dial the carb in.
Be aware that a fair percentage of single conversions have had icing problems, and that some ebay single carb manifolds simply could not be made to work.
