NGWCLUB Forum upgrades

Post by Whiskerfish »

Currently working with a contractor to upgrade the site. We are working on upgrading the server based program (MySQL) the Base Program Language (PHP) and the forum software (PHPBB) itself. So it is a big upgrade and has lots of potential for bad things to happen. I have everything backed up just in case things go really sideways but I do not think that will be an issue.

What you will see are times when the site does not look like itself and other times when the site may be completely offline for a period. Currently the site is schedule to go off line Sunday (23 Aug) about Noon (East Coast time) and will be off for a few hours. That is when the bulk of the updates will be done. Do not be in a rush to post as it may come on and off a few times during that process and posts made then may be lost.

Things may look different after that while appearance tweaks are being done. Those can be a slow process

Some Good news, We did a little experiment this afternoon and it looks like the Gallery program "MAY" survive. Still fingers crossed on that.

Please be patient. The chipmunks inside my skull are running as hard as they can.

The profiles thing is fixed. Still having issue with Pictures but I am confident.

Posting should be fine now, but I would hold off with any pics till we get that figured out.

Now that we figured out the problem with the internal gallery the pictures hosted by the forum software all have to be moved. I have started that process but it will take days. Once they get in the proper folders they will propagate themselves automatically in their respective posts. I am working from the newest backwards. There are 72,000 files. They are in 720 folders of 100 files each. So Be patient.

I have not had time yet to work on the big gallery. It did survive the upgrade and is still there but currently will not talk to the forum. Once I finish the internal pics I will look at that. I do not know yet if it is repairable or not https://ngwclub.com/gallery3/index.php/

You may have to refresh your pages to get pics to reload. For most that is CTRL and F5 at the same time

Posting pictures in your threads is safe again.

Everything that has been uploaded since November of 2018 should be visible. Will work on the earlier stuff starting again tomorrow.

Still working on loading pictures. I ran into an issue with the server having a 10,000 file limit in a single directory but that has been resolved and i will start uploading again this afternoon. Going to be a few days yet getting the rest of the pictures up.

I know the store is offline and I know there are issues with the Contact admin Function. I will get to them as I can.

If you have issues with the layout try clearing your cache and or restarting your machine. It is not 100% the same as it was but should be close so if you see something dramatically different you need to try the cache and reload the pages.

62,000 pictures/files have been move so only 10,000 to go. Once that is complete I want to get another full system backup (approximately 20 hours) before I start making any further changes to the ancillary programs.

Still moving forward.

All the pictures loaded directly to the Forum should be up now. I know looking around I see a few holes. not sure if they were there before or not. The way the pics are listed in the file system there is no way to find a specific picture and plug it in so any missing at this point will need to be re uploaded by whoever wrote the post.

I am doing some general file cleanup then a full backup and after that I will try and update the External Gallery and Store.

Just talked to the contractor that helped us out. He was able to verify that 71,959 files were uploaded. That is out of an original 72,330 so there are likely some holes but not enough to loose sleep over. After things settle a bit more I will start a thread for people to report missing pics and see what can be done abut them.

Gallery 3 (the external gallery holding most of the old stuff) is working and populating posts as it should. It still needs to be upgraded but looking through some of our old How Too's it is working. That is a very pleasant surprise.

I am still fighting to find a way to do a 100% backup of the site. FTP (what I have used for years) does not want to handle the directory with 70,000 files and stops itself at 9,998. So I will have to use a different program. Waiting on some information for that.

Once I have a New complete backup then I will have the Server Company complete the updates to the MySQL program. That is the last big update. Other than making sure we have a solid backup before I ask them to do it I have no control over that update.

OK the .htaccess redirect is working now. I hope once everyone gets their caches updated no one should continue having log out problems.

Any http:// or www. here should automatically be redirected to the appropriate https:// page and that will stop the member from being logged out. Now if that page has security issues, say a link to an offsite picture or file it will show up as a red or yellow mark on the security lock in the url line but it should not log anyone out.

So it looks like the Store Front (Zen cart) we used to have is a "scratch". It does not want to talk to the new program at all. There are a few more tricks to try but odds are that it will have to be a completely new install. I do not have time for that right now but it is on the list.

We still have many items listed in Cafe Press and we do get a cut from those.
