Crank but wont start

#1

Post by Shadowknws29 »

So I'm working on my first ever GL 1100 restoration. After weeks of sorting out a wiring mess I finally got the start button to work. The engine will turn over but wont start. Its def getting spark and fuel, theres a small leak in one of the carbs. I also changed out the timing belt, If i goofed something up there i'm assuming that would cause the engine not to fire. Am I on the right path for trouble shooting? TIA

Changed both timing belts. I have not done a compression test yet.

Ok. Check all 8 valves' lash clearance first.
You probably know this already...
Hold throttle wide open and choke completely off ( pushed in ) when performing cylinders compression testing.

are you sure you have spark on all cylinders? the 1100's had an electronic ignition. Also, when you changed the timing belts are you sure you had everything TDC? also (I am not an 1100 expert) but valve adjustment?

Finally got around to checking spark and compression. I have good spark on all four cylinders but I also have low compression on all four. 60 psi in the front and 90psi in the rear cylinders. I guess I’ll check the valve clearance next, the bike had been sitting up for an unknown amount of time. What else should I be checking?

Riding it for 1000 miles may help compression. Get to it.

I'm a big fan of this procedure. If you give it a shot you probably will be too.

mr. Shadowknws29 ,
I went back through your posts to discover what you have accomplished to this date.
I found the fuel system required attention. (No mention, though, of the fuel tank's internal condition.)

My wife said she was going to help and so far she has cleaned exactly one piece of chrome lol. I’ve bounced around from cosmetic to mechanical but I’ve buckled down and I’m focusing on getting the motor and wiring together so I can do a test start and check my first carb rebuild for leaks and such. Purchased all the carb parts from Randakks along with the rebuild manual.Thoughts and advice welcomed.

-bike's Carburetors needed refurbishing was mentioned. A Randakk kit and video had been procured. Done now? Yes. Yes?

If Yes, when they were reinstalled onto the engine, were their fuel bowls filled with gasoline before the engine was cranked for first attempts to start? If you rely upon the engine's mechanical fuel pump to initially fill all 4 carburetors' fuel bowls , it will take much longer than a new owner would expect just to get the engine to stumble to life.

Set all 8 valves' lash clearance at 0.006in. NIKE says, Just Do It. ;) Done? . If you need valve lash adjustment information, here's one of our Esteemed Members' work.
https://ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7436 Set all 8 valves' lash clearance at 0.006in.

Now, re-test all 4 cylinders for their cranking compression reading numbers, again. Post the new results here.
Utilize a screw-in compression testing adapter type gauge. The best for accuracy compression testing gauge adapter will be one with 12mm threads, -with an integral Schrader type check valve-, that screws directly into the spark plug hole.
Throttle always held wide open and the choke button pushed completely in.
Crank the engine over with a fully charged battery, continuing until the pressure gauge needle will no longer advance any higher on the gauge face numbers.

Asking for a follow-up now. Were you successful to eventually start the engine ?
