I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one if the right deal came up. Bought it new and rode it 50+k before an oncoming car made a left turn in front of me. Took me a few years to get back into riding, life and injuries got in the way. Worst points I can remember were dealing with the chain drive and a persistent off idle stumble.

"Persistent off-idle stumble"...any idea what caused it and is there a fix for it? The bike I'm looking at is essentially a basket case, but I don't see too many 1971 CB500F's riding around - it makes Lucien's CB750 look showroom new, if that's any indication, but I love doing stuff like that, especially since Kustom Cans makes a candy gold paint kit for $50! And parts for that year appear to be plentiful, so why not??

FWIW it needs a set of carbs ($$) and probably an air box, but other than that it's all there - anybody here have a lineup on those items?

You might drop the front end a bit for the full dresser "lowrider" look.

No idea what caused the stumble. I worked on it some and a local shop spent some time looking also. Don't remember what all was done, too long ago. Most noticeable when you quickly rapped the throttle. Darn thing would sometimes die before it could rev. Once it got passed the stumble it had plenty of power. Nearly got caught doing 95 on the way home one night.

Too cold to work outside these days. Decided to experiment on the shelter mods I want to do. The plan is to make the Interstate look more like a standard or possibly a bagger. After separating the shelter halves, I marked my cut lines and proceeded to cut away the wings.

Next step was to fabricate the insert from some discarded plastic. Made the raw cuts bigger than necessary and whittled a little at a time.

Up next was to fine tune the insert to make it close a possible.

The second side was a little easier since I already had an idea and something of a pattern to work from.

Next I will have to mate the inserts to the shelter halves. Ordered a plastic welding kit from Amazon and hope to securely mate the surfaces before adding a little bondo. If all that works, smoothing and sanding before paint. This is rather new territory for me and very experimental.

Do you have a sketch of what the shelter will be like when done? Looks like it is moving along well.

No sketches, just ideas rattling around in my head. Just hope I can remember to continue taking pictures along the way.

A little bummed out. The plastic welding kit arrived and my first attempt on a scrap went well. Seemed easy enough. Attempted the weld on my project and the first try didn't get hot enough for the shelter side of the weld. During the next attempt the gun would not heat up. I would like to take it apart but will wait to hear from Amazon to resolve the issue.

Gave up with trying to deal with the seller on Amazon and simply requested a return. That is so much easier. Ordered another one, this time from ebay. Different brand and slightly different style. Now we wait for delivery before I can try again.

Good luck. I've got one of my own (can't remember from where) and I love it. Had an otherwise pristine yellow 1000 side panel that was cracking around the bottom spring, and a couple staples welded in fixed it right up.

Still waiting for the tool to arrive. Ordered some aftermarket handlebar switches to replace the old damaged ones. Not exact replacements but should work. Was talking to another seller about some used oem switches. His price was too steep for me at $120 for some 40 year old parts. I'll have plenty to do soon as the nice days start coming.

Took the short shocks off and replaced them with some 1.5 inch longer that I had in my stash. Hopefully the ride height looks more normal. Also found some replacement bulbs for the dash. Not a exact match but they fit and light up the dash. really small bulbs for over $3 each.

Getting closer to stock rear height should help turning. Nice to get that corrected. Did you use 1 SMD type bulbs? These Surface Mount Diode LED bulbs work well in the dash of the 1975 to 1979 bikes.
