4 in 1 gauge to replace fuel gauge on GL1000

#1

Post by cfairweather »

I am working on my next projects (two red GL1000s) and decided to put a 4 in 1 gauge on the GL1000 that I will keep for myself. I plan to sell the other one.

I like it, but where oh where will you put the oil pressure sensor and how will you calibrate the fuel level?

Fred- Good question. I bought temperature and oil pressure sensors that match the gauge. I will replace the rear oil plug with an adapter plug with threads that will allow me to screw in the oil sensor. I will add the temperature sensor near the existing sensor but I am not exactly sure how I will do this. With the fuel sensor, I will attempt to use a variable resistor to determine what size resistor might make it work with the new gauge. If I can't figure this out, I can always buy a matching fuel sensor. I prefer to use the original GL1000 sensor if I can make it work. I installed a 4 in 1 gauge on a custom GL1000 build last year, but this one will be done slightly different.

Sounds like a solid plan to me. Might follow if you find great success.

I will definitely have to tinker with it to figure out the fuel gauge. After I get it all working, I will post how I did everything to save others some time. Notice this gauge has warning lights too. Pretty cool gauge and it cost less than $50.00.
Here is a picture of the rear. It took about an hour to cut the bigger hole and yes it was dangerous doing this on a newly painted cover. I was very careful and protected the paint with blue tape.

Thanks. To remove it, just unscrew the threaded ring and pull out the gauge. I think Honda should have done a gauge like this from the factory. It looks like it might have come from the factory that way, doesn't it?

Calibration of the fuel level should be easy. Just start with an empty tank and record sensor resistance as you add fuel in convenient increments (liters/gallons). The hard part is getting the gauge to display that.

I mostly used a grinder, but I did use a jigsaw with a fine blade to get it close to the right size. The main thing is to take it real slow :).
