From Banana Boxes to Bike, Rebuilding a 75 GL1000

Dear naked wing friends. I attempted to submit this post previously but it seems to have gotten lost. So, I'll try again. I recently met a man who, for twenty years, rebuilt 75 and 76 GL1000's for a hobby. Recently, his interests changed and he offered all of the extra parts he had collected over the years.

I own a 76 GL1000 Ltd. and needed a few parts but, the offer was "all or none". Now, I have more than enough parts to improve my 76, rebuild a second 75 and still have lots of parts to sell or trade. I've learned a ton from working on my 76 but I am still quite a novice. So, I was hoping to find a link in the "Restorations" forum to a tutorial showing the step-by-step of a total rebuild. I have not found one. Does anybody know of such a tutorial or guide?

I am adding a link to a Youtube video showing a quick overview of some of the parts. There are many, many more. If I go ahead with the rebuild, I will document the process with videos and pics to be posted here. I would appreciate your advice.

Lenord, you must have a large trailer to get all that stuff home. Good for you to save it.

Hi Fred. Thanks for the encouragement. Actually, it was a high-sided U-Haul, 6x8. However, my Nissan Frontier was fully loaded too....bed and inside.I see that you also have a 76 LTD. Tell me her story.

My LTD is 993,there is a build story on the board for her as it was a team effort to put her on the road. Going to sell her soon however as I do not ride enough for two bikes anymore.

This video shows me mating the frame and the engine in my 1975 gl1000 rebuild. It is pretty obvious that I am learning as I go.

Similar to how I do it. With the engine strapped to a furniture dolly, the wife picks up one end of the frame and I maneuver the other. About five minutes later the job is done! Actually mounting the frame on the engine.

I am continuing to make progress. In this video, I mostly show the false tank box on the frame and my attempts to route the wiring harness. Thank goodness, I have been able to strip down my 76 to get a decent look at her harness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7f40nvoHYNo

I'd keep at the main line. And make sure they both are opened fully (not just enough to get a cable through). You need a pretty healthy flow of fuel at times. Do you have a bad speedometer or tachometer cable? They work well. Also, a section of one in a battery drill in reverse is great for testing speedometers and tachs.

Thanks pidjones. I gave up on the main line and just now mounted the tank. Based upon your recommendation, I may however keep trying. The process is awfully slow. A friend did give me a good tip. Instead of pinching the rotating cable between your thumb and finger while attempting to push the cable, he suggested that I cut a small piece of the cable sheath and hold the cable with that. That saves some wear and tear on the fingers.
