After having gone through the parts bike and taking it apart, I've finally had a chance to start going through the boxes for the '76. I was extremely excited to see the quality of the parts that were in these boxes. Many of the chrome covers and pieces look almost new, whoever stored these parts in 1992 clearly spent a lot of time cleaning and polishing these parts before storing them. There are also several new pieces still sealed in bags, like all new clutch, accelerator, and choke cables. The original owner spent a lot of time carefully wrapping pieces and even left hand-written notes to identify the components and hardware.

I'm still not sure why this bike was taken apart at all. I'll have to go through the engine components closely to see if I can find what had initially failed.

I'll upload some pics if anybody is interested.

Well, I just learned that this block has been bored out, I believe .50 over. I was measuring the bores of the right case and found that they are about 72.40 mm instead of the standard 72. I haven't found any piston rings in all of these boxes, so I will need to find oversized piston rings.

It also doesn't look like these pistons have ever been used, because there is a '50' stamped on the top of the piston in ink which I doubt would still be there had they been run.

Comparison of oversized piston (left) vs. standard piston from parts engine:

Oversized piston with '50' stamped on top. I'm assuming this means that this is a .50 oversized piston:

Any thoughts on the benefits of using this oversized block? Would I be better of cleaning up the standard parts block to build?

It's hard to speculate on what the previous owner was thinking, but yes that piston is new.
It might be a interesting project to try to re-assemble, but being a "basket case", TRUST ME....
something important is missing!

If it were me, I would investigate that 79 engine on the parts bike.
If it is in solid condition, I'd use all the best stuff in your pile to get it up and running.

it sounds like you might have all of the parts necessary to put together a really good engine
that will fit right in your 76 chassis.

First thing, please change this Topic's title to- '76 GL1000 Restoration. ;)

If you need an OEM Honda GL1000 Shop Manual, here's a link:
http://www.goldwingworld.com/pages/GL10 ... manual.pdf

In Chapter 6 -Engine Lower End Repair- you will locate Standard size, piston-to-cylinder clearance dimensions.
--page 82 in the sidebar.

To answer your question, I personally would carry both crankcase halves and the .50 pistons (qty. 4 ) to a very reputable engine rebuilder and have them measure all 4 cylinders' bores, first. Get that important, will I or won't I, detail checked off the list.

Although I couldn't locate any adjusted dimensional information about 'oversizing' the cylinders' diameter for O.S. rings and O.S. pistons in the OEM Honda GL1000 Shop Manual, I would tend to think somewhere in Honda Technical Service Publication archives, technical data may have been printed for internal use at dealership level? Mr. Mike Nixon might know of a source?

Replacement parts reference. Part numbers and availability.

Thanks for the advice! I've already gone through the parts engine and taken it apart. I wanted to inventory the good parts that I'd be able to use and also better familiarize myself with the engine.

Thanks Cliff! The topic has been updated, I completely missed that I wrote the wrong model in the subject, good catch.

I like your idea of taking the block to an engine builder for measurement, that would give me quite a bit of piece of mind. I agree with your comments on adjusted dimensions, Is it just a matter of adding 0.5mm to the dimensions listed in the service manual?

I'll start calling around to see if I can find a shop capable of measurement the block, and perhaps giving it a good clean.

If you decide to build one out of two, use the 79 geartrain and selector forks as there are improvements over the earlier engine.

Compare the bottom of the two frames closely. In '79 they added gussets to stregthen the cross member that the center stand mounts to.

A bit of good news, I went by a couple of local machine shops this morning (one of them even recognized the Goldwing engine on sight!).

All of the cylinders are in good shape and within the expected size range (Less than the service limit + .5mm). There is a bit of surface rust on one of the cylinders, but it is not a concern and will clean up with a standard auto parts store honing tool.

Now I'm on the lookout for oversized rings. I see that Randakk's sells a kit with the rings, pistons, and wrist pins for $144. That's not a bad deal, but I'm hoping to find the rings alone.

It would take a little doing, but I bet you can find Hastings rings that will fit those pistons…

May want to check this outfit out…total seal piston rings

You can pick the 1200cc civic engine, and get .50 over without much trouble.

rings from a 2000 Chevy tracer 1.6 Litre from Rock Auto. Have a set ion my 1200, used 1 mm oversize and adjusted the ring gap to suit - 0.6 mm (0.024"). Working well. Check these out. Standard size is 75.0 bore, there is also 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm oversize. Ring thickness is 1.2/1.2/2.5 mm (top/middle/oil scraper). Enginetech rings are made by Hastings I was told.
