It is only 20 degrees here but I still got to spend a few hours out in the shop. Got several more parts installed.

I don't recognize that plate either but maybe a seat mount bracket from something? really like the use of the motor stand to rotate the frame. It is always a pain to get into all the nooks and crannies. More than once I have painted a frame only to find out I missed something. Your work is outstanding.

Ps. about 20 degrees way down south today too. Plus about 3 inches of snow, first I have seen in 13 years since I left Michigan. My project can wait a few days!
Bikes at present:

83 XL 600r with a 2004 XR650L engine
And a slightly worse for the wear BMW GS adventure bike awaiting repair
83 GL in process :IDTS:

I’ve gotten quite a bit done since my last post. Since I don’t have the factory seat rail I made some brackets fasten the rear signals to the frame. I have all of the wiring sorted out which involved redoing some questionable repairs by a previous owner and bypassing the RLU. I have bled the brakes front and rear and added a bracket to the left side of the frame to mount a second horn. I have also installed the tach and speedo cables and front fender. My new coils will be here in a day or two. I’m itching to fire this beast up!

That came from the 1100 coils that you fitted in. It was the shield for the ballast IIRC.

I WANT YOUR RIMS!!!! Hahaha.

On a serious note, great progress, everything is looking great! Are you going OEM paint or are you thinking of a custom color?

That is coming along nicely, as others have said, you do really good work. I admire your work ethic too, something I need to work on myself.

I’ll probably do custom color so I won’t have to worry about perfect match to original.

I don’t know if anybody has mentioned this yet, but the floor of your shop is just entirely too clean. You’re giving me a complex.

Nice attention to detail on this machine. It’s going to be a nice one.

When I retired and moved here and built this shop I decided to have the floor epoxy coated. Sure makes it easier to keep clean.

Funny you should mention this. These days there are lots of options with regard to finishes on garage or shop floors. Dirt, raw concrete, painted concrete, or any number of epoxy coatings. I really liked the speckled epoxy coating on the floor of my shop when we bought the place. It cleans up easily and it presents well.

But I hate it.

Why? Because anything, and I mean just about anything that I drop on this floor instantly disappears. I know what you’re thinking, that’s the case with just about any shop floor. But let me tell you, the speckled finish camouflages just about any object. Nuts, bolts, washers, O-rings. You name it. It disappears.

I really hate it. If I had it to do over again, I’d get a solid color. But then my mess would be more visible, too. <sigh>

That’s the very reason I went with the gray finish. I’m always dropping stuff and I have a hard enough time finding it on the gray floor. It’s funny how everything you drop finds it’s way under or behind something else.

Yeah, I'm hating your floor just looking at it too. I think you want a minimum amount of speckles just so you have depth perception on it.

I plan on using a master cylinder off of my ‘80 parts bike since the ‘75 MC is locked up and the 80 had good brakes. I decided to test it before installing it so I clamped it in the vice and hooked it to an old oil pressure gauge using a short piece of hose cut from an old brake hose that was cracked on one end. I put some brake fluid in it and primed it then hooked a bungee cord to the handle with the other end hooked to my big tool box with enough tension to get just over 80 psi on the gauge. It’s been setting there like with no leaks or pressure drop for 8 hours now. I believe its a good one.
