As far as venting of the gas tank goes, when I was a kid we lived in El Paso Texas and my Dad worked at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. He car pooled with a few other guys and they apparently drove through the desert at a speed higher than the posted limit. There was a time when his car (1964 Chevy station wagon) was not running properly and lacked power so he took it to the shop he trusted and the mechanic found out that since the gas cap was not vented it created a vacuum in the tank to the point that it not only had a problem sucking the gas but partially collapsed the tank. They replaced the tank and my Dad got out his hand powered drill (he never owned an electric drill) and drilled a 1/16th hole in the gas cap.

I just re read your story. Good read. And I didn’t see if you set your dyna up better.
I rode my 75 for years with a 3rd gear stumble from 3 to 4 k. Thought it had to be carbs. Had carbs rebuilt.
Ran and idled and started fantastic. But that stumble was still there. Hooked a small circuit light in the pick up line for one side of dyna. Moved dyna magnet pickup to when light goes off. Then did the other magnet pickup. By golly the stumble went away. Timing can mimick fuel problem I guess.
