The bike I just parted came with a Markland fork brace. Since the current project already has one I decided to try fitting it to my 75. A little fabrication and some shims, it is mounted. Turned the brackets for the tubes upside down and included a 1/8 in shim to make it line up better. Put in some thin metal shims to help grip the tubes and it looks like a winner. Someday I'll find a Honda logo for the splitter and make it pretty.

Working on the brakes today and made a couple of observations. Noticed the brakes are not linked. Not a big deal since many owners de-linked their brakes over the years. Also noticed the forks are not trax. Makes me wander if the forks and brakes were swapped out or if some of the 83 models did not get the newer forks. Not a big deal either way, just one more surprise.

Al, I'm wondering if you're working on a bike that's had a frame transplant in the past. As you note, the '83 should have the Trax forks and linked brakes, as well as cast wheels versus the Comstar. Did the engine you removed have the neutral switch on the right side, like the 1000? IIRC, all '83's have the switch under the transmission cover.
One thing to watch out for on the brakes, especially if you're buying rebuild kits: the '82 and '83 each use different size master cylinders as well as two different sized front calipers on the stock '83.

Hard to say about a frame swap. The forks, brakes and wheels lead me to think 82. Motor has the switch up front as in 83. I have 2 front master cylinders that look the same from the outside. I'll have to look closer to see if they have the same size piston. Would like to test fire this motor pretty soon to be sure it will run. Not going to buy any rebuild kits till I'm reasonably sure this will come together.

Got far enough today to spray some carb cleaner and hook up the jump box. Something of a surprise happened, it fired. I'm nowhere near enough to have it run but it is a bit reassuring just to hear it pop pop on it's own.

A little more progress over the past two days. After the test fire, mounted the exhaust and cleaned out the side bags. It's beginning to look like a motorcycle again. Will be pulling the carbs off again to shine up the caps and I forgot to tighten the cable ends. Clutch seems really stiff but I have not done any adjustments yet. Front brakes still need some work also.

Figured out where those brackets belong, in the parts bin. Apparently I failed to file them in the appropriate pile as I was breaking down the 81. The set I need are still on the fairing.

Had pretty good afternoon results. Got the radiator mounted and poured in a gallon of gas. She fired up pretty easily but leaking gas from one of the float bowls. Carbs out and a quick check found some loose screws on a couple of carbs. Quick check to be sure they are still clean and put them back in. This time she fired up and ran pretty good. Ran long enough to cycle the fan. Two problems showed up, leaking fuel pump and leaking thermostat mount. Used a Autozone t-stat and it seems to be not quite right the way it fits. I do have another fuel pump on hand. Still need to look at the clutch as it seems to be very stiff.

I admire your dive in, intestinal fortitude. Eventually after i can rustle up some money will get a used 1100 carb set and do a randaak's rebuild of the rack. I know very little about carbs. I have rebuilt a few carbs for some of the junk cars i owned and had to keep running like a poor farmer. But thos kits were "paint by number kits", no theory of operations and did not make me an artist. Im up for the challenge.

All the best...keep on keepin on!
