The scrap yard I’m currently visiting (wife thinks I’m having an affair somewhere) has a bike with the fork brace fitted, is it worth snagging it?

A fork brace definitely improves the handling, and are fairly expensive. I'd nab it if I were you...

Especially if the donor bike is a 1100. Your signature says you have an 81. I was mostly experimenting with fitting to my 75. I am happy with the looks but have not done any riding yet.

Still plugging my way through stuff. Set the fairing back on and looking at the wiring mess. Twisted wire connections and black tape everywhere. A bunch of loose wire with nothing connected is going to take a while to sort. I'm thinking there may be a ground problem because there a some lighting issues. New battery installed today. Voltage does not go above 10 even after trying to charge it. Think I got a bad one. It started the motor one time before the voltage dropped.

Battery was purchased on Amazon. Contacted them today and a replacement is on the way. They don't even want the other one back. tumb2

Got the rest of the electrics sorted today. Lots of corroded connections and the ground circuit was the worst. Eliminated a bunch of unused wire and connections. The only thing not connected is the rusty lighter/accessory plug. Traced one bad connection to the underside of the fuse box. Won't get my replacement battery till Thursday. Had it running for a bit today and unplugged the jump box. Proved the stator to be good because it did not die right away.

Great progress. The battery issue sucks, though. At least you can get a few bucks for the bad battery if you take it to a recycler.
Sounds like it's just about ready for a ride!

Another big break today. The clutch plates broke loose and I now have a working clutch. The leaver is still real hard to pull but I will work on that. The new battery is good and starts the motor easily. Had to pull the starter to clean it up a bit. Plastic parts are getting cleaned and installed. Petcock was only letting fuel through on reserve, a little air pressure cleared that right up. Would like to take a short ride but it's too darn hot.

Not much progress lately. Too many other irons in the fire. Put in a new starter solenoid, dealt with some battery issues, added a sense wire to the regulator and can't remember what else. Still need to mount the shelter and seat so I can take that test ride. I'm ready to get this one out of my hair.

Really left this one to sit for too long. Pulled the carbs off again for cleaning after I installed a new fuel filter. Put a choke cable in the wanted section. Too cold to do much right now but I can get ready.
