I'm a sucker for a good priced project

Another project bike popped up on Marketplace today and I snagged it. It's a 81 Interstate with just under 27k on the clock. Real dirty from sitting in a barn for some time. None of the brakes work. Missing the entire exhaust system and the key. Lots of surface rust and hard to tell what shape the paint is in. Good news is the motor spins freely with the starter. All the plastic is there. Detachable hard bags. Seat seams to be in descent shape and a clear title. Clutch may be gummed up as I tried to use it to offload and it didn't give. That's all I can think of at the moment. Price was good enough for me to jump on it.

Looks like a solid start. Definitely needs fork seals from the looks of the sag. It's got the Standard's faux tank, so I'm guessing the fairing was added, probably by the dealer. The Standard also had a shorter rear fender.
Something to keep you busy for a while!

Looks like a really nice project. Exhaust systems are a lot easier to find at your side of the pond than over here.
The key should not be a problem, if you remove the ignition lock the number is stamped on there.

Great way to get a standard set up depending on your love for Fairings. Nice that the seat is okay. Seems like a somewhat quick turnaround but the clutch needs better understanding.

Even a fork brace included that's worth the price of admission alone. Should keep you busy this spring with a project in this downtime. Could be the new "Grocery Getter" if it is a runner with a little coaxing. :crosso

Spent most of the day pulling off parts and assessing the project. Removed all the plastic and the shelter for cleaning and to reach the ignition switch. Took over an hour to remove the stuck foot brake. Can't do anything with the removable hard bags till I get keys made. Used the power washer to get rid of years worth of barn dirt. Pretty sure the windscreen is toast, gonna try to polish it Most of the paint is in ok shape except the front fender. The front part of the shelter lid is detached from the hinge. Thinking about cleaning the surfaces and riveting the pieces together. Open to ideas on that.

The fork brace and removable bags could come close to recovering my investment if it came to that.

Definitely has good bones. But I have to confess that your thread title is what drew me in. I'm the same way, only I think I might be worse. I'm a sucker regardless of the brand and/or model it seems...

Not much motivation over the past few days. Waiting to hear back about getting some keys made. Brake pedal is ready to re-install. Popped in a couple of rivets om the shelter lid, will have to see how that looks when finished.

Once you get the keys, you are going to be moving pretty quick. Wise to get a few hundred miles in before considering mods and paint. Seems like down time is best to do that, but best to wait on those proof of concept miles.

Boy is this good advice. But I have to confess that I don’t always follow it. More than once I have dove in before fully assessing complete viability of the machine. Anything is fixable, but it’s pretty easy to blow your budget sky high.

Been pretty lucky so far…

I'm assuming this project is another 'flip,' right? Finding a stock exhaust in good shape, cheap, will probably be the hardest part. I haven't shopped for a set lately, but they seem to be kind of hard to come by. You might be looking at fabbing something up. FWIW, the 1000's headers fit the frame fairly well, especially the '75-77. The '78-9's outlet turns upward and is pretty close to the frame near the swing arm. Fabbing an exhaust using the 1100 headers is a little more complicated as it has a welded joint, so there's no outlet to clamp onto. I believe there's a link in ShopTalk to Roady's exhaust fabrication for Whinnie...

The plan is to flip for sure. I have a set of headers from a early 1000 in hand. Figured on some low cost, whatever I can find to fit mufflers. Got a key made but it doesn't fit all the bag locks. Not not happy about that. Think I'll go for a ride before messing with this today.
