The offending bits have been replaced, and the whole lot is mechanically ready to go back together for some time.
I have also fitted a primary chain tensioner from a GL1200 while it is apart.

Hello Liam, forgive the question and curiosity, why did you mount the primary chain tensioner of a GL 1200 in the engine of a 1000 LTD? are the advantages?
Hi Paola
The Early GL1000 engines do not have any primary chain tensioner, only a chain guide.
The chains stretch slightly when the engines get some Miles or Kilometers on them which is one of the reasons these engines make internal noises on tick over.
Later engines had a tensioner fitted to help with this. The 1200 tensioner was the third version of this and is generally looked at as being the best.
It is a straightforward bolt on modification while the engine is apart.
Very interesting project thread. Read from the start. Look forward to following. Nice spray gun. I ventured into painting with spray guns this year as well for the first time ever. Total exterior repaint of my 1500, lots of plastic pieces - 30 to be exact, not to mention the plastic trim. Next big project will be a repaint of my '85 1200 Limited Edition - needs a fresh look after some 35 years. Good luck as you go forward. Cheers

thank you very much for the precise explanation, I always learn something.

I am taking on board comments you guys made about painting before or after assembly.
The best option seems to be assemble first and then paint.
There were a few jobs that had to be done while the engine was apart.
I needed a new scavenge oil pump and a new drive shaft for the pumps, I got these and fitted them.
A couple of things are puzzling me.
Below is a page from the Honda Shop manual.
It says to bring the pistons to TDC before assembly. How can this be possible if the main journals for cylinders 2 and 4 are 180 degrees apart?
It also states that the left cylinder bottoms have a large chamfer which means that the piston rings do not need a ring compressor to assemble.
I have looked at several videos on youtube and they all show some form of ring compressor being used.
Never been there ... not going .... but I’m cheering for you if that helps ....

Both pistons at the same height. There is a tool that fits under them to hold them level and straight. I just use a block of wood to do the job. Then the other half of the case is lowered over the pistons. no ring compressor needed. May have to wiggle it or help the rings in with a screwdriver. After the cyl. clear the rings, remove the tool/ wood block, an d lower the case half. Not to hard, and gets easier after you do a couple

I ran out of procrastination material, so today I got stuck into putting the 2 halves of this engine together.
After some huffing and puffing, I ended up with this.
I set about putting the clutch in with new plates and springs.
I had to check a lot of reference material, as surprisingly some of the reference material has a lot of ambiguities.
I solved all my issues with a visit to http://www.wingovations.com, I got a lot of information there that answered my questions.
