Absolutely right on the water pump. I didn't do this on the Phoenix when I had the engine out this past spring and now I'm kicking myself because I'm slowly weeping coolant and will need to address it soon. It seems I like to do things the hard way..Track T 2411 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 04, 2020 11:26 pm Replacing the water pump is just good insurance, IMhO. While you have the front and rear covers off, I would recommend washing out as much oil sludge from the sump as possible. I like to take off the oil pickup screen access cover on the lower right hand side of the engine to get more access, and use brake cleaner spray to dissolve and blast out the gunk. If you tip the engine slightly forward it will all run out the front. You might also want to check the neutral switch while the engine's out. It's pretty hard to access later.

Wait, what was that about accidently loosening the stator bolt? I can't even do it on purpose!
I'm gonna need a bigger wrench..

Sheesh. They don't make them like they used to. Not only that, I may not be in my prime anymore, but I don't think I ever had the strength to bend a wrench like that! Maybe with a vice and a hammer...

Haha I wish I was strong enough to do this with my bare hands, but I was using a rubber mallet. Besides, most of my strength is still recovering from replacing the steering bearings. Muscled the rotor off and took a look at the rollers, followers and springs. Didn't really see any wear. The roller tracks looked like they weren't perfectly smooth, will take a closer look when I clean it up. I'll also hook the starter up to the battery to see if it is the cause of the grinding noise instead of the rotor.
In other news, got the engine flipped over and will hopefully finish de-greasing, stripping the paint, and masking off this evening. Then I can paint and let sit for a week.
