my 1100 rebuild/resto
gday guys, I have been meaning to post a starting point up for a while now but for one reason or another I havent. the project is on bit of a hold for time being as Im waiting to for my frame to come back from repairs. It had a dose of cancer in the lower right hand side of the frame. Thankfully I found a bloke here in Perth Western Australia that does such work, Been a while now but Im told good things take time.
so, end of September last year I found an 1100 wing. Hadnt been run in 15 years im told, speedometer kida reflects that with 39000km on clock. I havent tried to start it as yet as im waiting for belts, gasket set etc as I want to do paint job on the engine anyway and that means lots of bits and pieces are coming of and will need new gaskets. i Did however remove the plugs and was able to turn engine over by hand.
I got the big girl home and went to town on it immediately. I think I got it home about 1pm, just after lunchtime, by 9pm I had everything off stacked away, labelled and checked and the engine left on my bike lift. so while Im waiting for my frame to come back I just started on bits and pieces. Polished rocker covers, belt covers, carb tops etc.
Today I just finished restoring the instrument cluster centre. It had a cracked glass and I was able to get a few cut for the job. Im pretty happy with the finished product. I had another centre that wasnt real flash so I did that one as well. Both came up ok..
Ive been contemplating how im going to get it painted, colour etc, frame powder coat or not etc. I bought a new spray gun today (gravity fed) and ordered a few parts for my compressor to get it up to spec for the spray.
I want to give the guys (for what its worth) at premier paints in Malaga here in western australia. Good bunch of guys, set me on to a good entry level spray unit and its operations etc, how to set up and so on. Couple of other shops I had been to when I said im not an experienced painter just fobbed me off..these guys..great. one of the guys is a custom bike builder, He showed me photos of his custom CX500. Very nice job, very professional.
When I said I was restoring a gold wing, thats when the discussion really took off as he has bout a 76 1000 from over stateside and hes going to customize that as well. Going by his previous work it will be a ripper...anyways got chatting tanks..put me on to a tank cleaning product and lining..its a whole kit by KBS australia so Im looking forward to getting hold of that...Ive attached a few pics to where it currently is..not much to show until I can get my frame back to really start butting the jigsaw puzzle back together.

at a standstill...But im going to get my tank repair kit sorted so then I can paint my tank and have that ready, not sure how im going to unblock the reserve line as yet tho...working on ideas

Yes Fred Camper... It is. Found a guy here that custom builds frames for Norton's... Typical Norton kinda guy... Older bloke, white hair, white beard, comes out in the classic black t-shirt with Norton across it. Frame builders like him are a dying breed... Plenty of other bits and pieces to do. Working thru my list of things. I pick up my stainless brake pistons next week... Then I can get all my calipers and master cylinders sorted. I'm having the master cylinders stainless sleeved as well...

Nice find, and way to jump right in! It's surprising how fast parts come off, and how slow they seem to go back on!

Looks like a nice project. That bike has a lot of life left in it. All it needs is you to bring it back. The brake restoration is a big job. The caliper bodies shouldn't need to be sleeved. The seal goes in the bore and seals to the piston. As long as the area where the seal sits is not pitted, then the caliper housing should be usable.

Yeah I hadnt heard about having the master cylinders sleeved but apparent the guys at Perth Brake and clutch centre here in perth do exactly that. I guessin the oversize bore it the put the stainless sleeve in and machine to the required size. Im no engineer so Im just guessing what would seem to be a logical way. I have to supply the guys with the master cyl parts obviously to be spot on...

I assume you mean "sleeving"? Im only assuming steps at present but once they are done ill post up the finished items. Those steps Im guessing would be machine current bore out, insert new stainless sleeve, machine to required size??77Gowing wrote:Yes tell us more about sleeping a master cylinder.

This is a labour of love. My 1st big bike at age of 17 was a 76 wing...so now, im 53 this year, im going back to my 1st love...

I picked up my tank kit today. Its suits a 45 litre tank so ill get a couple lots of use out of it.
and the paint for my frame and associated parts..apparently its super tough..better than powder coating. Time will tell I guess
