For some reason I thought the OEM water pump should be flimsy and plastic. This one is metal and robust. There is no free play - no movement at all in fact. Once I finish cleaning the outside of the engine I will open it up and figure out why the pistons are seized. If I can free up the pistons I will take another look at the water pump function.

But I was having trouble keeping the engine clean because of this guy - my best friend Moto the track dog:

Moto's job is to protect the bikes, and normally he does a really good job. But he cannot stop himself from urinating on this GL1000 engine. Every chance he can get he is lifting his leg to it. I discipline him and he knows he is wrong - he has that guilty dog look on his face - he just can't help himself. It must be the years of rodent urine built up on the engine. He can smell it underneath the WD40 and PBB - it's like a siren in his head constantly forcing him to pee right there on that engine that I have been trying to clean.

I have to keep him away from this engine. I need it clean so I can break it apart. My only option is to lock him in his cage all day (he hates doggie jail!) or move the engine into my kitchen where I can close the door and keep him away from it.

So I really hate to let the dog run the house or tell me what to do, but I couldn't stand keeping him in his cage all day. Besides, it is totally normal to have a GL1000 engine in your kitchen, isn't it?

That is an OEM pump. But it is not metal. It is bakelite. When I restored my LTD it still had an original pump, very low miles, and no play. I took the chance on it. As soon as it was started coolant started puking out of the weep hole. So the trans cover had to come off and a new pump installed.

Drape a plastic tarp over it (the engine, not the dog).

Cool looking dog.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Great job cleaning the engine. It looks brand new now. Funny how Moto wants to put his mark on it.

Thank you for catching that, Gord! This site is so helpful. I now have a new water pump on my list! I am also ordering a gasket for the front engine cover - that was not included in the gasket kit that I got. Thanks everyone.

Yeah, Moto is a good boy. And I like having this engine in my kitchen - it is growing on me. I have had a fascination with these engines for a while now but I never imagined there would be one sitting on my kitchen floor. It is right there every time I walk through my kitchen. Hello.

I took off the front cover and the inside was not nearly as scary as I thought it would be:

The belts practically crumbled to the touch in several places, though. And the heads looked like there was somehow a gasket failure on both sides. I can now see how bad the pistons are:

I am cleaning up the cylinders with WD40 and blue shop towels. And then every time I pass through the kitchen I stop and spray the four cylinders with WD40 and smash each of them with a hammer and a wooden block. I do this several times per hour whenever I am home. This cadaver cannot resist forever - sooner or later it will give up the ghost...

My '79 junker had enjoyed water on the crankcase side. Transmission gears were rusted. I salvaged a few parts and trashed the rest.

Unless you prefer its other name - polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride. So easy to pronounce. Rolls right off the tongue...
