1983 GL1100 Begining the Journey

#1

Post by Robbiga »

Hi All,
I brought home my 'new to me' 1983 GL1100 last weekend and the tinkering has begun. I picked it up for $1800 so I wasn't in the DogHouse for too long. It has 20k miles on it and it looks to be in pretty good condition.
The guy I bought it from said he replaced the water pump, starter, calipers, tires, paint, and timing belt about four years ago and only put a couple hundred miles on the bike since. It has spent most of its life sitting the garage so I'm sure things are going to come up.

I took it out for a morning ride and a new sound started coming out of the Tach. I'm hoping this isn't a symptom for something bigger. The performance of the bike wasn't effected so I thought I would thought I would ask for your feedback before I crack anything open. I made a quick video so everyone could hear it.

It's either the tach itself, or the drive cable. You can lube the cable first, and see if it goes away. I typically use chain and cable lube. I don't see the tach needle jumping around, so it might not be the tach itself.

Four years of mostly sitting. Change the belts. Much cheaper than new valves.

Hi All,
I hear yah, new belts are at the top of the list. I took apart my tach and gave it a PB Blast. It seems like it did the trick.
I made a quick video so everyone could hear the results. This was my first time taking apart a tach, so I guess you could say I was Wing'n it... LOL
