Good news on the home front today. While tracing and cleaning contacts, I pulled the spark units off and cleaned all the surfaces and the frame mount. Used my ohm meter to see if the pins on both units were the same, they are. Compared them to a spare set and they are different. For grins I cleaned and mounted the spare set and it fired up on all four. It still runs rough and will die under 2k. I had previously swapped the spark units from side to side with no effect. Not sure what happened here just glad to hear it run again.

Looks like I may have head gasket issues to deal with also. Getting a lot of white smoke smoke and some unburned fuel on the left side. Not going to jump in right away in hopes I can get it running a bit better first. Still runs a bit rough and will die if it gets under 2k. On top of it all I may have screwed up my new starter in the process.

OK. I need help with this problem. #4 refuses to hit. Getting plenty of fuel, 160 lbs compression and sparks fine when I lay the plug om the head. Am I missing something?
Second problem; ignition timing seems it is advanced too much. Cranking with the kill switch on will spin with no problem. Turn the switch to run and it cranks real slow. Don't know if the timing is adjustable but sure feels like it needs to be. I'm gonna pop the belt covers to verify the marks. Pretty sure they are lined up but will check maybe tomorrow. I did swap the plug wires to make sure I didn't wire the coils backwards.
Just a little lost at the moment.

My head gasket statement appears to be premature. The white smoke did not have the sweet smell of antifreeze. Finally got the #4 cylinder to fire and the smoke is all but gone. I still have a ways to go because it still won't idle below 2k. I now have a second set of carbs to test with. Put the carb styx on and did a preliminary sync. Still having starter issues but the seller is making good on that. I'm getting closer.

Planning on chipping away. Weather didn't cooperate today to do anything. Went grocery shopping instead. I do need to take a closer look at the advance tube, pretty sure it is not the correct type of tubing.

Another wet day here so not much going on. At least the new starter has arrived and the previous seller has done a full refund. Borrowed a carb adjust tool so I can start on fine adjustments. Hoping for a dry day tomorrow.

One step forward an two steps back. Still could not get the bike to idle below 2k. Decided to try the set of carbs from another member for comparison. Spun the engine without compression to fill the bowls and the starter relay stuck. Before I could break the connection the main connection for the brushes heated enough to break connection. This is on my brand new starter. I believe I can repair the damaged connection, just a little discouraging.

It is being a royal pain. Got the starter repaired tonight. Need to look into the relay before I try again. Won't get much done over the next few days, busy with work and such.

Built a starter relay from a heavy duty tractor relay and the original connectors. Curious to see how it works. Hope to put it all back together this weekend.

The new relay works great. No additional wiring modifications needed. Only problem is the physical size is bigger and had to squeeze it in. Made a boot out of some old inner tube and tied it in place with some zip ties. Motor spins and no sparks. dancr

Put it all back together with the second set of carbs. Good news is it does run. Bad news is it runs the same as with the original carbs. Anything under 2k and it will stall. Carbs are synced, each header gets hot but uneven and air screws are at 1.5 turns except #1. Increased to 2 turns because the header temp was very low. Don't know what to try next. Still seems like it is firing too early because when warm it struggles to turn over when cranking.

That at least eliminates the carbs. So it was progress. ;)

Compression check?
Leakdown?
And yes, timing.
