Another project followed me home today, 82 Wing.

82 project popped up for a good price. Dragged it home this evening and hope to get started on it soon. Will need the tank cleaned, front master, starter or selenoid (came with 2 additional used starters) and some work on the foot brake pedal. For the most part it is in fair condition with a nice paint job. It seems like it is pretty complete. PO removed the shelter, seat and one of the crash bars. Could be a profitable flip.

Good find! Looks like it's in pretty good shape!

Front master is not dead. There was so much air in the system there is no way it would build pressure. I'll bleed it some more next chance I get. Messed with the starter a bit and I should be able to get one working. Bike came with two used starters so I have plenty of parts. Lights all work and the horn may work once I get it running. Had to give it up for the day.

Installed a pieced together starter and got it to spin the motor but no start. Sputtered a bit and made lots of engine noise. Starter didn't last long enough to get any good results. All three starters look like they have been hot enough to burn the internal connectors. Armatures and brushes are very dirty. Not sure yet if I can salvage at least one of them.

Not having much luck with my starter. I think the latest attempt resulted in the starter self destruction. I'll have to pull it apart to find out how bad it is. I did get to spin the motor enough to show 160+ psi on all four. Put the plugs back in and it sputtered and almost started before the starter gave up. Got rid of the old stinky gas but still need to pull the carbs for a cleaning. Front brake is now solid and free of air bubbles. A little more cosmetic done also. I need more free time.

Also need to know what is used as a stop for the brake pedal. It looks like there is something missing or maybe had something to do with the original exhaust system. Guess I could fabricate one east enough. I'll look at the parts fiche to see if it shows up.

Had the worst experience trying to pull the carb rack today. Whoever last worked on this routed the cables so they were against the frame with no room to move the rack. I twisted and turned till I could finally get the cables out. Had to remove the trailing carb tops to get enough wiggle room. This is the first 1100 I've had the pleasure of doing and not having fun with it.
Also having trouble seeing spark at the plugs. Coils have 12 volts, wires and caps are new and show continuity, timing light used to detect pulse on each wire. Not sure where else to look at this point.

I always have a bear of a time removing/installing the carbs on my 1100's. The #1 and #3 caps and slides definitely come off for me to do it. I ran the throttle cables outside the frame, too.

Regarding the spark, you might want to check the spark units, although I believe the '82 units were improved from the '80-81's. Also check your grounds...

The cables will be routed outside the frame when it goes back together. My 75 is setup that way and it is sooooo much easier.

I'll have to educate myself on the spark units. Was assuming they were good since I can see the pulse with a timing light hooked to the wires.

Duh, you're probably right, the spark units would affect the consistency, not quality of the spark... '82-83's had different coils than the '80-81's, and have a ballast resistor. Might check that...

Ok, so I reset the gap to spec and checked for spark in the dark, bingo. The starter is still junk but at least I can start putting it back together.

Got far enough today to actually hear it run (badly). Gives me the mental ok to spend some money on belts and a new starter etc..

Ordered some parts today and prepped for install. Pulled the radiator and found the t-stat was missing. Water pump feels tight. Verified all the timing marks before I change the belts. Pulled the carbs again and #2 was dirty. Explains why it wasn't firing yesterday. Maybe one of the '1100' guys can tell me how to check the ignition timing on this one. Also found one of the idle air screws is not stock if anyone has a spare.

There really isn't a way to check the timing statically, and AFAIK, no way to adjust it. You can check the timing and advance dynamically with a timing light, of course... The advance unit is vacuum, which can be checked for leaks with a mighty - vac type tool. The vacuum line runs off the back side of the carbs near the fuel inlet.

I'm curious, how is your idle air screw 'not stock?' If the adjustment limiting cap has been removed, they look quite different. If the length or taper of the needle end itself is different, then I'd question it. Just saying. (BTW, I may have a spare, I'll check later today...)
