Re: 1983 GL1100 Interstate bratty bobber project
The issue here is that I can't get the nut off either side. It gets towards the end and then the bolt just spins as I try to unscrew it. There isn't room to get a pair of vice grips clamped onto the threads to hold it while I unscrew. I can get a pair of needle nose pliers in, barely, but they don't have enough grip to stop the bolt from spinning. I just hit both ends with some PB Blaster. Maybe it'll ease up enough to come off one side. I'm getting very frustrated. I'm doing all my work in my driveway and don't have any air tools here so I can't even just cut the nut off and get a new one at the hardware store.

Clamp your vicegrips on one side while turning the other side .... the visegrips will jam against something and hold that side while you undo the other side .... heat can help ....

Re: 1983 GL1100 Interstate bratty bobber project
Ok, hear me out.
I swear that was the first thing I tried, but it felt like the bolt was just spinning. I think the heat was getting to me.
It's getting closer to where I want. This weekend I got the timing belts changed, oil changed, pulled got the engine mounting bolt lose and removed the floorboards/guards/ride-off stand, and radiator swapped.
I started on the wiring today and gutted most of the extra junk that was running to the radio, CB, antennas, and misc lighting. The bike still started when I was done, but the radiator fan didn't kick on. This may have been just because it was such a short amount of time idling, but I didn't want to test my luck overheating it. I made sure to test the fan before I installed the radiator so I know for sure that it does work.
My headlight bucket is sitting there with the harnesses in it and I need to sort it out then mount it to my cheapo Amazon brackets. Still need to figure out what kind of foot pegs work for the bike. Most of the cheaper OEM stuff on ebay looked like it was in real rough shape so I'm going to find some cheap generic pegs to keep the costs down.
To do:
Check/set valves
Sort out these weird unified brakes
Install foot pegs
Order slimmer seat
Chop down fenders
Install new license plate holder and brake/turn lights
Chop muffler tips or swap to sportster mufflers
Swap over the superbike bars I ordered
Paint wheels
New tires

I would take those floorboards and heel shifter for my bagger project if your trashing them. I have a set of sportster, road king and softail mufflers (3 sets) that I won't be using if you want them. PM me and we can talk logistics.

Hey, txtriathlete, I PM'd you.
Haven't gotten much more done on the bike. The bleeder valve was broken off on the rear brake caliper. One of my work buddies is gonna try to build up a little weld on it, then weld a nut on it to get it out. If he can get it out that's gonna save me a $100, which is the cheapest I saw the original rear calipers going for on eBay.
Basically waiting on payday again so I can order tires. I checked the tires and they were manufactured in 2003. No bueno.

if you haven't taken the caliper to your buddy, strip it, heat up the caliper around the broken bleeder screw and try an easy out...I would try that instead of running the risk of boogering up the threads with weld.cdwillis wrote:Hey, txtriathlete, I PM'd you.

5speed, he's already got it. I got a set of extractor bits and attempted to get it out, but it wasn't happening. I wanted to have him look at it before I went overboard and he said he's had better success with welding the nut on. The guy is a very good mechanic and welder, so I trust him.

You can drill it out and install a rescue bleeder from the auto parts store for about $6. You will need a 1/8" pipe tap, too.

Put 2 nuts on one side and tighten them together, that will lock that side up so it doesn’t spin for you. I have a spare radiator if you need one.
