Shock's '82 GL1100 STD - getting it back on the road
Ok so I picked this bike up about a month ago and I've been itching to get going but work (I do home renovation work) has been busy. I have never really embarked on a project like this before but I have done some mechanic work (changed out a starter in a car) but nothing major. My expertise is working on old homes from the 20's to 40's. Anyways enough about me here's some info & pictures of the bike.
1982 GL1100 with just over 50k miles on the ODO. You can see the PO painted a few things black, added a windshield that I'd like to keep, and installed some fog lights that still work. Bike will start with carb cleaner and you could work the throttle to keep it alive once it's been warmed up a bit but won't stay running.
Here's my project list in no particular order- Timing belts, front blinker, horn (the horn doesn't work for some reason, makes a noise when button is pushed. Low priority fix honestly), rebuild carbs, re build the brakes (new lines/pads/rebuild calipers/new master cylinder, ECT), rebuild the front forks (put in progressive springs while I'm at it), rebuild the rear shocks & add springs that don't require air or replace with progressive 412s, new tires (fronts are from 2000 and rear is '03) and probably some other things as well.
First project I tried to attack is replacing the timing belts. Got to the "remove generator bolt cap" step and the head is stripped. Not terrible but not great...
Well since it took me most of the day to remove the seat, take the false tank off and pull the radiator out so I could replace the hoses/test the fan/replace the thermostat/check the water pump and get an 18mm spark plug socket looks like the timing belts will have to wait for when I can get my vice grips (at a job site) to get that generator bolt cap out of there. Might add heat with a heat gun. Looks like I'm in the market for a replacement bolt cap now.

Good score on the 82 Standard as they are a nice bike once fully operational.
Be careful when removing and grabbing that cap on the rotor cover, as they are made of aluminum and easy to snap off. I broke one on a oil fill cap of the rear end drive once by snugging it up a little too tight and it sheared the piece clean off.

Re: Shock's '82 GL1100 STD - getting it back on the road
in reference to your rear shocks. I replaced the factory air shocks with progressive series 12's on my 82 standard.
I was going to go with the 412's but they only come with heavy duty springs (at least up here in Canada). I don't carry passengers on my bike so I went with the series 12 and the "regular" springs.
extremely happy with the ride now compared to the air shocks.

Used a little WD40 and the vice grips got it out of there with minimal fuss. It helps to have the right toolflyin900 wrote:Be careful when removing and grabbing that cap on the rotor cover, as they are made of aluminum and easy to snap off.

I have them set on the 2nd notch (1 being the softest) and I weigh 245. Haven't come close to bottoming out like I did with the factory ones.Shock wrote:

Stopped by my local auto store and bought 8 - 12oz cans of carb cleaner. The guy at the counter asked me if I was planning on huffing the stuff. I can think of better ways to catch a buzz!

Oh and mild (as in mild steel) is a 4 letter word. Needed the vice grips a couple times to get a few screws out that had stripped heads.

I can't remember how long it took me to remove my carbs but I was a week easy rebuilding them on my gl1000.
most of that time was spent watching Randakks dvd on the process several times during my rebuild.
