I like to use spray brake cleaner on most stuff. Just seems to work better and doesn't leave any residue. I wouldn't worry about how long it takes, especially if it's your first set of wing carbs. They are SO much fun, lol! I hope you purchased Randakk's carb kit. It's pretty much the go - to kit...

I did, I got the book with it as well. The book is great and full of very good info just wish there were more photos! Leaves a little to the imagination when I don't specifically know the jargon. Working it with a different guide with pictures as a supplement

most of that time was spent watching Randakks dvd on the process several times during my rebuild.
Didn't realize there was a DVD, I might have tried to get it but I'm just going to stick with the book I got with the carb kit from randakks & other online guides

The DVD is geared toward the 1000's carbs, and other than some general procedure tips wouldn't help all that much for 1100's carbs (in my opinion). Clean, clean, and clean everything again, don't settle for 'close enough' on the float height settings, and rub down every surface that touches each other on the slides and caps, and you'll be a happy camper! If you have any questions, post 'em up, and we'll get you going...

What Track T said..
the one thing I almost didn't do was test them for a vacuum leak..
I bought a vacuum tester and discovered one of the rubber lines had a very small crack in it. something I would have spent days chasing..if I even did know what the problem was.
I had never worked on a motorcycle before and I followed Randakks dvd to the letter and had no spare parts, no leaks and the bike started and ran. anim-cheers1

Worked on cleaning carb#2. Took me all day and it's still not 100% complete. The slow jet is clogged with something fierce. Learned a lot on how best to attack the cleaning aspect tho so I'm sure the next 3 will go a little faster. And to think I was worried about being done with the carbs before my new fuel filter arrived lol

If you give the entire bike the same attention to detail as you're giving the carbs, you're going to have a fine running bike. Very impressive.

Just an update - still working on cleaning those carbs. Haven't been able to spend the time on them due to me becoming an uncle and fixing old home problems!

One issue I am going to have is the metal fuel tubes are stuck in the carbs. I used some carb cleaner on then in hopes of loosening them up. No joy. Was thinking of some sort of rubber wrenches kinda like an oil filter remover. We'll see.

But metal fuel tubes, do you mean the tubes that run between the two carbs on each bank? If so, they are (should be) only held in by o-rings. They are aluminium, however, so they will mark up pretty easily. I'm pretty sure I could come up with (pay for shipping) replacements if you damage any beyond your liking.

Yeah those, I ended up being able to wiggle them out but took quite a bit of force. Lots of white corrosion holding it in tight

Well I kinda stopped with the daily posts because I got really busy and only had an hour here and there to get the carbs cleaned. Besides everyone here has probably seen a hundred of those carb pictures.

Just got everything cleaned and reinstalled tonight. Was excited to run out and get some fresh gas and crank it up until I saw this:

No way I'm putting that into the carbs I just got done cleaning. Looks like I'm draining the tank and going from there.

That is tempting.

I checked the tank and it wasn't hazy this morning so I assume it is sediment settled to the bottom of the gas tank (or maybe it was air bubbles and I'm just crazy). I dumped more fuel in to stir it up and drained it. I'll repeat the process and hopefully that will take care of it. Inside of the tank looks fine from what I can see :dunno:

Finally go around to cleaning out that gas tank. Took a shop vac to it to empty it (I really didn't want to remove the gas tank) and this is how it looked empty:

Not bad in my estimation. I'm sure the more experienced of ya'll would be glad to see that.
Filled it up with vinegar, let it set over night, rinsed with baking soda & water to get this result:

I checked the reserve line and it was clear of anything solid (blew air through it and ran a 14ga wire down the line inside the tank).
Ok looked good to me so I filled 'er up with that fancy ethanol free stuff (after additional drying of the tank thats not pictured) and decided to kick the tires on starting the bike for the "first time" (I got it warmed up before making the video)

Woohoo it runs and idles! :-D So I guess I did something right with them ole dirty carbs which is a nice feeling.

I did notice some smoking coming out of both pipes, carbon burning off? Rings? I didn't notice any oil and coolant mixing after oil change + flushing radiator. Spark plugs were pretty black (from the PO) but I got some new ones I need to gap and install to get a better idea of how its running now.
