I found out that lacing up spokes and truing the wheel was NOT as easy as it looked (even having the '76 to compare to).

You know it's never that easy..........
So I fired her up and when reaching operating temperature, the idle would rise from 1,000 to 2,500-3,000.
I took to this site, read and asked. I received many good recommendations.
By the way ........you can get VERY quick at taking the carbs off at the 3rd or 4th time !!
I gave up and finally called one of the carb gods! Pistol Pete.
I sent them out to him and he commented on how good a job I had done on the rebuild. He put them on his test engine and checked them out.
Got them back, put 'em on, fired it up........... SAME THING!!
Called Pete and he said "hmmmm" in a knowing way (he thought that he might not have got them totally up to temperature) ........HEY........stuff happens.
So he tells me what to try.........
Take a flat screwdriver and place it on the #2,4 cylinder sync screws and very carefully bend ONLY the "C" shaped part out. So......... I did.
NOTHING. He said try it again.
I did this time with a little more force and........... BAM !!!! the idle dropped to 1,000 and has been great ever since.
He told me that the arms can get bent slightly and when the heat rises, they distort just enough to cause the RPM increase.

You'd think now, it was completed........NOPE !!
All the body paint on the '76 was 98% perfect.
So was the '75 ..... EXCEPT ...... the center false tank piece. Had to be repainted.
I tried myself with one of those companies that you find the matching paint code for the bike. I received the base coat and then candy semi clear..........didn't come close.
I had it painted TWICE locally........didn't come close (one didn't even try).
I had it painted TWICE out of state.......didn't come close (one of these didn't even try).
SO......…???

I was (again) cruising ebay..........and I could NOT BELIEVE IT. COULD NOT BE POSSIBLE.
I found an OEM panel (in the OEM box/wrapping) ...........out of GERMANY !!!

You have done "well my son" The bikes are very nicely presented. Paint etc. The only thought I have is that the fork emblems must be found and mounted. They are costly and I don't understand how many must have been stripped off of bikes like yours and lost to future generations. Somewhere there is a raft of those emblems or someone has start making reproductions. Nice bikes, I would be proud to ride either one.

Ditto. Great work. The notion “spare no expense” comes to mind. That’s the way it should be done (and was) – on both of them!
