1983 goldwing project build.

I'll start at the very beginning- this is how I bought it:

I then, lovingly (and perhaps hastily) ripped all that junk off her, to let her breath for the first time in almost 40 years. I weighed all the farings, bags, steering weights, and extra trim pieces and decreased weight by almost 200 pounds!

Then I rigged up an old headlight bucket from my 1984 CM200T Twinstar, and the taillight assy from my husband's old 1981 CM450, and she was ready for the road.

I ordered a seat from this nice man out of Texas, His business is called Texivina. He made me a nice bolt on seat out of vinyl, and I've been happy with the condition as well as the comfort of the seat.

I was able to take all my faring bits over to this really neat Motorcycle Salvage shop named Ty's Motorcycle Salvage in Longmont, CO. I traded him all the junk off my bike for a 1974 Yamaha DT 100 enduro. So that felt like a real treat!

I was able to ride it in this iteration for a couple of weeks before I really began to be concerned with the brakes, as well as the tires, as they were both old and I hadn't really looked at them yet. Which leads me to this disaster:

THE BRAKES!

So this has become quite the mess; It turns out a past owner (and grade A idiot) found that the front left(correction: front right) brake caliper wasn't working up to snuff, and just clipped the linked line to the rear brake and wrapped it in a t-shirt so there wouldn't be any leaks. Yikes! I also found that the rear brake fluid reservoir was completely empty, and the MC is completely clogged. I was able to use compressed air to get the pistons out of the calipers and begin to clean each of the calipers.

Next was sorting out how to unlink the brakes, and then finding the correct seals and ordering them. I was able to get lots of help from folks on the forum and was directed to the correct seals needed. Now they are on order, and I must wait for them to arrive... I have also ordered a new front MC, and new lines for the unlinking process.

In the meantime, I got started on some cosmetic upgrades, the first of which was to change the color. I have rattle canned a couple of other bikes, and just haven't been happy with the results, so I figured I would try a vinyl wrap. I found this beautiful white pearl with gold sparkle and began with a side pod. Man, the results are beautiful. I reused the old badges, and I'm pretty happy with the result.

I have the rear fender and tank remaining but have gotten the hang of it.

Next is reworking the headlight and taillight, I've ordered some over-the-top brass and chrome lights and blinkers, which I think is going to just make this bike look ridiculous. I'm pretty excited. I'll post photos as things arrive.

next is to complete the brakes, fork seals, and check the carbs and belts.

I've been thinking about a wrap for my 78 cafe build but from what I've read online getting it wrapped isn't a lot cheaper then getting it painted.

I ordered the wrap from Amazon, I chose the 3M wrap over the other popular brands after doing some research. I ended up buying 5'x6' which was about $100. When I called to have my bike painted, I was quoted about $1500, So it just made sense to me. I do believe it's more expensive or comparable to painting to have a professional do it.

Looking great! I'm amazed at the weird and sometimes dangerous things po's do. I've only once ridden a new 2 me bike without a thorough check over, and that was because I knew the seller. Glad it didn't end in a crash!
The vinyl wrap looks great! A how to would be cool!

Nice job on the wrap, looks great and something I've been pondering doing myself. If you have any specific tips, please share. action1

I'me sure you might already know this, but when you unlink the brakes, you have to use the FRONT brake port on the master for the rear brake and plug the REAR brake port. The plug you need is the same one on the lower of the front calipers. If you don't do it this way, the rear brakes will lock up soon after taking your first ride. (Don't sak me how I found this out!!!)

Oh, thank you so much! I’ll be mindful of that for sure!
