76 LTD Followed Me Home To Canada

#1

Post by Alarmdoc »

I found this nice LTD earlier this year to add to the stable. The P.O. had only put on about1000 miles in the last 10 years. He was the second owner and had purchased it from his buddy. It only has 29000 miles on it.

I haven't had much time to work on it this year until recently.
So far I have replaced the timing belts, new oil and filter, new plugs, cleaned gas tank inside. It only had some small amounts of rust. I had cleaned it with Evaporust . WOW this stuff works great.

After painting the Oil Filter and lower case and cleaning up a few parts I have now decided to pull the engine and clean and repaint it too.

This is my first time doing any kind of restoration and with the great information from the people here I am sure that everything will work out great.

I plan to rebuild the brakes, master, and hose both front and back.

Since the engine will be out I will pull the starter and rebuild it also. Paint it too.

The exhaust and headers will be repainted with VHT.

This being my first rebuild post I hope the pictures turn out Ok as I know you all love bike porn. lolol

Looks nice. I point out one thing though. The LTD did not have the chrome shield on the exhaust header pipe. I see yours has one on number one and two pipe. ;)

Hi Robin

Thank you for the tip. I had assumed that I was missing two chrome shields.
I would have thought that they might have added the chrome shields along with the other chrome bits. I would like to bring this as close to original as possible.
I will probably remove them.

I appreciate the expertise.

Beautiful machine. I would not be worried about additional chrome bits. You can always take them off.
I would worry more about missing bits like the grab rail that are difficult to get.

my Ltd had a u-joint go out. As the 1000's progressed Honda made better u-joints, the best by 78-9. Might not hurt to get a later one on flea-bay just is case

Hi Liam

Yes I do have the grab bar from the seller. He had it put away since the back rest was installed.

Hi Rcmatt007

Thank you for the head's up. I will check fleabay to see if I can find an older one.
Are the join's the same for all 1000 years?

Would I need the whole shaft or are the u joints replaceable?

yes, any of the 75-79 works but, no, the laters were much improved. the early years lasted maybe 50K.... well heck no one expected a MC to last that long. My ltd went out at about 50k.... so if you find a flea-bay from a 78-9 (usually in the swing arm) grab it. I was on a trip when mine went out (2012) and got a u-haul to get to my daughters in DC, quick shipped a flea-bay and installed in her apt garage
