Yep, I wish I still had my '69 Mustang fastback and/or my 70 Cougar, but life marches on! I probably won't do the crossover upgrade, but the tweeter upgrade was well worth it.
I can't wait to get the Wing on the road, I'm shooting for either fall of this year or spring of next, I'm not doing a "motor out" restoration, but I DO want it to shine and to run perfect.
Any opinions out there on replacing the water pump preemptively? Since I'm already this far into it?

Re: Restoring my ‘77
The water pump is always a crapshoot. If the bike has sat for an extended period, there's a pretty good probability that the pump will need replacing. I've bought three 1100's that sat for several years and needed the pump replaced. Others here have had a pump that checked out fine with the 'wiggle and twist' test only to have the pump start leaking later. IMhO, if you're planning on significant traveling and can afford it, replace it now. My two cents...

Agree. The mechanical seal in the pump seems to degrade from the lack of use during storage. I can imagine that deposits will build up on the seal face due to seepage over the years.

My bike was last registered in 1995, so yeah, I'd call that an extended period. OK, that will be on the list, thanks!

To keep it brief, I will say the heavy lifting is done by Polk Audio Monitor 11Ts and Fisher STV-724s totally rebuilt even the cabinets. Had an SX950 and let it go years ago. Regretted it and replaced it with the 980. Even though it has the more difficult to find/replace hybrid output modules.jnevill wrote:My daily driver is an SX950, sitting right next to a Sansui 8080BD, and i have a Marantz 2250B on the shelf across from those! What kind of speakers are you running? I'm an HPM guy (three pairs of 100's, 2 pair of 700's, a pair of 900's with the original woofers), but I have some Klipsch Forte's, Boston A150's, Dynaco A25's, you know, the usual suspects.desertrefugee wrote:I'm rocking an SX 980. Never occurred to me to trade some of that stuff in on motorcycle parts...

Re: Restoring my ‘77
OK, I think I have everything for the first step of this resto-mod, here is my inventory list -
1) Water Pump
2) Temp sensor
3) Thermostat
4) New front engine cover bolts
5) Gasket set
5) Timing belts (should I replace the TB cover gaskets?)
6) Still need to polish up the timing belt covers & intakes, front forks, etc
Next up, radiator hoses, new cap, already have brand new aluminum radiator, need new fuel line, petcock rebuild kit (why is the '77 petcock different?), sandblast & paint radiator mounts.
Is there anything I should be doing while I am down near the water pump? I need to replace the neutral light sensor, but I may wait for that.
Anyway, thanks in advance!
Jim

Belt cover gaskets are just dust seals .... and they are expensive!
Unless yours are really beat up ... re use them
