1978 With sidecar
Had many years and miles of great service from my 1983 GL1100, and sold it for smaller sportier bikes when the kids grew up and out and I did not need the luxo barge so much. However always missed certain aspects of it. Now remarried with a late life surprise (2year old) I found myself back searching for the "family truckster" again. Of course it had to be a gold wing.
However this time I wanted a more classical bike and a GL1000 fit the bill. I found this 78 already with the hack cheap, which was fine as a project was also in need of. It has been sitting for about 30 years just as you see here. Certainly going to need work even though it was put away properly. And I want to strip it down closer to naked with only a couple small needed exceptions like the sidecar and backrest for my wife.
Here it is as found in its hopefully not final resting place.

Re: 1978 With sidecar
After I removed sidecar and stripped the vetter stuff of, I was much happier with the look. Was also happy that the original owner I got it from still had the barely used original seat. Carefully packed away in a plastic bag in the loft since 1980.

And where we are currently. Carbs off and pre cleaned externally but will need to order Randaaks kit to actually get busy on them. However surprisingly decent considering how long it has been. Im sure the drain out of them helped. The tank not so much. I did find a good replacement tank.

Re: 1978 With sidecar
Acquired this other 78 in a barter. Was originally thinking parts but it does have a good title and is fairly complete. I may save it for a future project rather than part it out.

Re: 1978 With sidecar
Great project. I bit off a bit more than I wanted to chew last year with a '78/Terraplane hack. Sold it off. You selling the car?
Either way, good to see you back on board and doing project work!

Re: 1978 With sidecar
Keeping the hack but would love all the baggage out of my way.lol
Had a terraplane on my 1100 for a bit. Would have loved to found another. Great sidecar.
And good to be back thanks.

Very nice find! I'll bet it was difficult getting the little one to stay out of the side car...

Re: 1978 With sidecar
that is a really small car for a wing. You will need more ballast than Ben

Re: 1978 With sidecar
I am aware. Not new to sidecars by a long shot. Feeding Ben well.
I will address sidecar supports, suspension and weight once the bike is done. More worried about sidecar supporting the bike weight than just adding ballast. Although bigger axle than a Velorex.
Oddly enough however is that the sidecar has been on the bike since 1980 and nearly 30,000 trouble free miles through multiple states. Like I said, got it from original owner. When I kringed at the combination he looked at me like I was stupid. Saying something like "Your crazy, handled perfect" I know he was lying, they all handle terrible.

Re: 1978 With sidecar
Not to much progress other than a bit of parts gathering.
I did manage to complete the carb rebuild using a randaak kit and Honda needle and seats. Now that the bitter cold is past I will be spending more time on it... hopefully.
