1983 GL1100 New Build
Hey guys. Some of you seen my bike when I introduced myself. I am the proud owner of a 1983 GL1100 that I found in Connecticut for $100.
I had a few spare time this weekend, so I figure I would start the tear down. But before I started to tear it apart, I figured... Let me try... So I tinkered and tinkered. I got it to start with the starter. LOL. Felt good.
So I started the tear down. I am going to repaint, so I started with removing the plastics. Some PO used rattle cans on this bike. Never even bothered to sand anything first. So... I have my winter project, LOL... But I found a bigger issue. When I pulled off the left side saddle bags, As you can see in the video, I found this rubber hose sitting there with a bolt in it. Then I noticed all of the rust on the rotor. Then I realized that the caliper was missing. Someone had broken a caliper bolt off in the bracket. And instead of fixing it, they took the caliper off, cut the hose and stuck a bolt in the hose. What kind of moron does this stuff?????
So,,, I have some pictures as to how the bike started out and where I am at. I will add more as I progress. Before anyone says anything. I do not have a garage. I work in a Harbor Freight 10 foot by 10 foot tent. And I have 2 bike projects going at once. So I know its a mess. LOL
The guy didnt tell me until a few days after I bought it that he got scared off after reading the repair manual and it said step 1 to starter replacement was remove engine from frame. Well, As a lot of you know, that isn't the case. It does however need the starter clutch rebuild. So, it has to come out anyway. I had a few spare time this weekend, so I figure I would start the tear down. But before I started to tear it apart, I figured... Let me try... So I tinkered and tinkered. Re: 1983 GL1100 New Build
welcome to the site.
here is my "what kind of moron" story.
bought an 82 Shadow 500 for my wife when we first got into riding. while changing the exhaust I discovered a rust hole in the frame behind the section that is removable for pulling the engine.
so in the process of tearing it down to fix it I noticed what I thought was white lithium grease around one of the bolts holding the section of frame on.
turns out it was silicone..
some PO had broke the bolt off in the frame, attempted to drill it out, screwed that up too, so they cut the head off the bolt and used silicone to hold it in the frame, so it looked right.
nothing I find surprises me anymore.

Re: 1983 GL1100 New Build
Isn't it fun discovering what crazy things po's have come up with? On a side note, seems we have several things in common... My daily driver 'Grumpy' was purchased from a fellow who also read the 'pull the engine' directions and got discouraged, I don't have a garage, I have at least two bike projects going at once, and I've discovered that 'Tidy Cat' litter pails work great for storing parts...

Re: 1983 GL1100 New Build
OK.... So I took the day today and pulled the engine. I have a question for you guys. On the left side of the bike, i found this "button" for lack of a better word, stuffed behind the battery box. It looks and feels like a momentary switch of some sort. Does anyone have any ideas what it might be? My phone was acting up so i don't have a picture right now. I am replacing my phone tomorrow, so i can post a pic. But in the mean time, does anyone have any ideas?

Without a pic, it's hard to say, but it might be the button for the factory intercom. I'm not sure how they were originally mounted, but I've seen a few taped to the side rail of the trunk frame. From your previous pic it looks like the bike had most of the sound system at one time...

Here is a diagram that enlarges pretty well. Keep it for future reference. The diagrams for the 83 aspy are quite hard to findin readable form.

I have a diagram somewhere just for the radio/CB/intercom system, but I can't seem to find it. I do know that the switch pictured is part of that system...
