Thanks, I'll check it out. I cleaned the area up pretty good and I'm pretty sure it was water intrusion from the environment (rain or washing). The thermostat housing and upper hose seem to be dry. I was concerned about those areas and any coolant passages in the crankcase in that area but I'm not sure that there are any there. I drained the coolant and it appeared to be clean and very green so that makes me think it was just standing, rusty water trapped behind the timing belt cover.5speed wrote:the only way to fix the twisted picture problem is to host your pics online somewhere and paste the link here. you might even replace the pulleys. Even with the rust off I would worry about the pitting. fleabay can be a good source for the pulleys. Tnesioners are still available from mother Honda, and there is a thread in shop talk on a DIY replacement

Yes I think that's a good idea as well. I have a 79 parts bike so Ill have to start looking at the compatibility between the two. The frame on the parts bike is a little banged up and I haven't cracked open the engine just yet so hopefully its good for some parts.rcmatt007 wrote:you might even replace the pulleys. Good work so far and seems you have a plan. The deeper you dig, the more you'll find. At the moment, you are at the (reasonably) easy to reach parts. If they haven't been taken care of, what about the hard to get at bits? Good luck.

I decided to call the engine "good" for now and I'll address the belts, tensioners, pulleys, and crankshaft seal when it's out of the bike. I started the tear down process. I almost enjoy the disassembly more than the actual build or a repair.
One note - following the steps in the Clymer for the fuel tank removal, it says once its free and everything is disconnected and moved out of the way that it should slide back, up and out of the frame but I do not see how without removing the rear tire...
Anyway here she is, partially stripped. Time to start thinking about color schemes etc...

My 2 cents!
At some point I would recommend pulling both heads to see the condition of the bores and do any clean up that is required. A good time to lap the valves and replace the valve stem seals while it is apart. I have had good success with aftermarket head gaskets, yet many members swear by sticking only with OEM. The gaskets I have purchased are off Klasa Racing in Poland an EBay seller usually with excellent prices, just a little longer shipping time.

Much easier to set it on the lift as is and take the frame off of the engine. Especially since you have it down as far as you do.
