1975 GL1000 project, first Goldwing

#1

Post by brewer013 »

Hello everyone. Here is the start of my build thread. I picked up a fully dressed 1975 Honda Goldwing GL1000 a few weeks ago. It was willed to someone from a friend and according to him, it was running but parked last year around hurricane Harvey time.

The spark plug wires on the right are destroyed from a dog attack and the left shelter panel is scratched up from said dog attack. The rear brake pedal is seized but the brake caliper is not so that's one issue to investigate. The front master cylinder piston is also locked up, some wiring is cut from the Vetter fairing harness, fuel lines are dry rotted but other than those issues, it seems to be a complete motorcycle. The tool kit, original keys, and kickstart lever are even there. Odometer shows 21000 but I assume that it has rolled over at least once.

I've already sold the saddlebags. The Windjammer III front fairing is in fair shape. That and the trunk, luggage rack, crash bars, and the mirrors are up for grabs so far if anyone needs them. I'll post them in the for sale section after I read up on the rules over there.

I've dabbled on and off over the years, no expert by any means. My first real build/project was that CB750 in the pic. It was a basket case that sat for 26 years.

No Marines stickers sorry... Prior service Army here. I think what you are seeing is an NRA sticker. They have a similar look.

looks like you have a good start. Always hard to know about an odometer as a lot of these bikes just sat a lot. Looks like you are missing the carb chrome things, they come up on fleabay often. Cannot say the same for the missing grab rail for the back of the bike

Looks like a nice solid bike to start with. As said above, one can never be sure about actual mileage. Sitting can take it's toll on stuff too.
The rear brake pedal is mounted to a large 'pin' on the frame. It's common for them to freeze up. A good dose of your favorite penetrating oil should help free it up, then a good cleaning and grease will get it working again.
I'd also suggest you replace the rubber brake lines. They are most likely originals and should be on your list...

Thanks for the advice. I hit the big pin and spring with some PB Blaster last night so I'll see if that worked tonight.

Great new project to start with and a totally different ride than the CB750C you have there. I think once you get it sorted and roadworthy you are in for a pleasant surprise. Lots of good help and details on the forum from members and the Shoptalk section on here.
Look forward to your build thread. :-D

Well last night was a busy night.

The rear brake lever is still locked up on the pin. I can get it to move with a big hammer but that's about it. I disconnected it from the master cylinder but didn't put much other effort into it. Pulled the front master cylinder and it definitely needs a rebuild or replacement.

Replaced coils, wires, caps, plugs, points, and did a compression check. Gapped the points and did ignition timing without a strobe. I also replaced the fuel line for now. The fuel tank will need an interior stripping and coating for sure. I checked the oil and coolant and decided to try to fire it up. It started after a few cranks but will not run on its own. I noticed that the mufflers were blown out in many places on the bottom so I pulled the muffler assembly off and tried again with straight headers. It starts and has throttle response but will not run without choke and a little throttle help but I'm not surprised. I'm sure the carbs will need a cleaning.

I noticed water dripping from the timing belt covers on both sides. So I pulled the covers and saw this mess in the pics below. I believe its rain water from sitting outside for a few years. The oil and coolant look good. I cleaned up the area and it looks like the main crankshaft seal in the front may be leaking a little oil. I'm not that familiar with this engine so far so I was concerned that the water was old coolant but I'm not sure how it would get into that area.

I would think replacing those timing belts might be a good idea

the only way to fix the twisted picture problem is to host your pics online somewhere and paste the link here. I use https://imgur.com/

the coolant could be leaking around the thermostat housing, from the upper hose, the rad..

Most definitely. The tensioners have a good bit of corrosion/build-up/pitting on the belt riding surface so I'm thinking they need to go as well.
