Thanks fellows for the positive comments and yes the OCD is alive and well when it comes to working on these old bikes.

I do enjoy doing it as a hobby for sure. The plan is to get it running and ride it for a short time and then a member of the Canadian Vintage Bike Group is interested in buying it. I have four bikes currently on the road and it is a challenge to keep them all running and happy. I liked that this one was low mileage and the fellow I bought it from was a decent straight up guy with no BS. So pass it along to a fellow member and another one is saved from the parts bin.

It has kept me busy over the winter and now riding season is sort of back, its time to move onto outdoors stuff like riding these old gals.

The buyer will be a lucky fellow!

I have an '82 gl1100 standard that I'm going to start working on soon and I hope mine turns out half as nice as yours!

I lot closer to the finish line now as I have the bike totally back together mechanically and was able to actually fire it up today and do a carb sync. The bike started quite quickly and seems to run well overall given that it sat for 5 years prior to my purchase.
I have used a 1978 GL1000 chrome front fender on the forks as it bolted right up and I like the looks over the more bulbous original one. Still have the stock unit if needed in the future.
The only issue I see so far is a lazy tach needle response which made the carbs sync interesting. I will run it for awhile to see if it clears up before I get into that further. The cable spins fine and picks up speed appropriately when the engine is reved, so I think it is in the gauge.
So now it is down to the body panels and it has still been too cool and damp around here to shoot any clear coat yet.

On a side note; I sold my 1976 GL1000 build from a few years back which was the BOTM in April 2017. It went to a new young owner who was very happy to have a well sorted piece of Goldwing history.

Finally I have been able to fix a few minor paint flaws and shoot and wet sand the new clear coat on the plastic bits, so technically I am finished.
Which begs the question.... "Are you ever finished?"

I was able to ride it today about 75 klms as a test shakedown and it is running very well now. The lazy needle on the tach has fixed itself for now and some minor shifting issues are gone. The bike sitting for over 5 year probably allowed the clutch plates to stick slightly. So it runs, idles and stops just like a Goldwing should and I am very happy with the outcome.

It will be living with me for the foreseeable future and then available to the CVMG member who has expressed an interest in buying the bike. Speaking of the CVMG club it is our Paris Ontario yearly get together this weekend and I have the bike heading down there for a debut. I do plan to take advantage of the local area rides if mother nature co-operates with some sun vs rain.

I have put about 1000 klms on the bike now and have been riding a variety of back roads with no super slab In the mix. The gas mileage as checked on the last two fill ups was 55 mpg and 58 mpg today, so really good. The bike starts immediately even after a number of days sitting without any issues and no oil leaks or use so far in the distance travelled.

Quite a different bike than the 1976 GL1000, yet I am very pleased with the way this one rides and performs. I would say the GL1000 was slightly faster in the take off, yet this bike is no slouch once underway.

I changed 3 sets of tires on various bikes this spring all to the Shinko 230 Tourmaster and on this bike and the 1983 CB1000C I really like how they handle and ride. On the 1984 Gl1200 Standard I am not pleased with their ride or handling on grooved pavement, rough pavement, or tar snakes.

I just had a vintage bike appraisal done for insurance purposes, since you actually get better coverage which includes fire & theft, collision, liability and agreed value replacement. Regular insurance only offers liability and some medical for twice as much.
The vintage coverage has allowed me to put more bikes on the road and enjoy the different rides they offer...even if they are all Honda's.

I just spotted your very detailed, and excellently presented account of your re-build project. You do beautiful and very precise work for sure, and I'm very impressed. You obviously have a great love for what you are doing, and your '81 GL is beautiful. Thanks for posting, and thank you for the excellent step by step description, and great photos.
And for what it's worth, I agree with you completely, that your finished bike looks so much better with the chrome front fender. I may be a bit biased, being the owner also of a '78 GL, but I think it it makes for a much more striking look. Just my opinion.

I agree with Solina Dave about the front chrome fender. The standard one looks clumsy in comparison.

Thank you gentlemen for the kind words about the bike and yes the front fender has really grown on me as a much cleaner overall look. For a guy who normally only does restorations back to stock ... look out I may show up in the resto mod section one of these days.

I truly am awed by the work some of our members do with their vision and ability to take these bikes to a whole different level on that forum.
