Comstar wheel refresh.

#33

Post by flyin900 »

action1 It's an abandoned bedroom in the basement. Close to the rear garage stairway entrance.

I spent some time cleaning 37 years of grime off the wheels and touched up a few scratches with the DupliColor low gloss engine enamel #DE1634, as it is a close match to the original black finish. I sprayed the wheels with a DupliColor gloss wheel clear coat finish as shown. I have used this product previously with good results for longevity and easy clean up with soap and water when dirty.

Here's what they look like before the rotors hide most of the rims.

Half a roller tonight with little electrical wiring.

#36

Post by flyin900 »

I was able to get the front wheel attached to the forks and cleaned up the main wiring harness. I like to go through every connector with an electrical contact cleaner and repair any PO wiring modifications. This one had no mods, just a few areas where the electrical tape was coming apart, or rubbed through in a few spots.

So I have added more bits and pieces back onto the frame and got the front brakes attached and mostly set up. Sirus Consolidated a parts supplier up here has a set of the three front brake lines manufactured to OEM specs for $37 US for the set, plus a new rear line for $17 US complete with the rubber standoffs for the routing clamps. I used these same ones on my 1976 build and I am happy with the quality, performance and price.
The electrical harness is routed and I have started hooking up various electrical systems and some of the cables.

I like to replace the main stand and side stand springs when I do a refresh on a bike, as they are very inexpensive to buy new from Honda. They just give the finishing touch to a repainted lower stand area.

Body panels cleaned and front end finished

#38

Post by flyin900 »

I have gone about as far as I can with the clean up and break down of the remaining small parts and body panels. I have ordered some aftermarket Honda emblems for the false shelter and will be refreshing the others. The paint/pinstriping on the body panels is in good condition with only small swirl marks in the clear coat. I will shoot fresh clear coat on all the body panels once I am able to next spring. There is some damaged paint on the front fender front tip that is visible, so I may paint match and respray and pinstripe again in the spring. I can't shoot anymore paint or clear coat now with winter already outside the door.

I will update again in the spring once I start putting it all back together as a finished project. Thanks for following along!

It is looking very nice. I have a '81 GL Standard that I'm getting back on the road. I'm interested in the aftermarket emblems. Where did you get them.

James I was only needing the false tank HONDA side emblems and found the correct size from a Thailand seller on EBay. They have the correct look and are the right length, yet no pins on the backside to mount through the shelter like the OEM ones. They use two sided tape and two holes to screw into the shelter to mount. I believe I used the same style on my GL1000 restoration a few years ago and they looked fine and like OEM.

I will look for the seller contact info, as there are a couple of sellers on there and only one seems to have the correct length of HONDA logo.

I got mine from here https://goldwing.nl/en/. The emblems have the pins to get the correct position and are fixed with (very) sticky tape. No problems so far, but I don't ride (my GL) in the rain.

I like the ebay seller, they have some nice parts. I have saved the UK seller. It is expensive to ship to the US. THX for the tips.
