Got the primer done today on all the parts.

It turned out to be a humid day with some rain at points, yet I was able to work around the weather and get the primer coats layed down on all the small parts and the few large ones too like the frame, gas tank, rad and the engine.

I also was able to both prime and paint the rear drive unit with a DupliColor wheel paint that is close to factory colours and quite tough finish wise.

Frame came out well so far. I couldn't get the swing arm off with my homemade castle nut socket which has worked well on past projects. The pivots bolts were really frozen in there, yet the swing arm moves freely and no adverse play in the bearings. I thought about using heat on the parts and decided to leave well enough alone with only 29K kilometers on the clock.

Successful paint day - all parts painted now

#22

Post by flyin900 »

Well mother nature finally co-operated with nice weather and not too much humidity today. I was able to paint everything both big and small with great results. They will need lots of time now to cure properly so I will not be doing much more than some mechanical items on the engine.
I have received the valve stem seals and front cover gasket kit, so the valve stems seals and front cover are the next items up for work before it gets too cold in the garage.
Engine painted now with Dupli Color (Aluminum) engine paint.

Motor updates now finished

#24

Post by flyin900 »

I have been able to get the mechanical updates done and the motor will be stored in my garage over the winter. The water pump is newer as installed by the PO. I did remove and clean up the lower front cover and replace the gaskets and O rings in there, as someone was red RTV happy and it was quite a mess inside there. Fortunately the loose RTV seems to have been only in the cooling section. I cleaned out the oil pump screen and virtually no dirt was present and no RTV and the motor internals are very clean.
I did a valve stem seal update with the heads in place and replaced the timing belts and the thermostat assembly. The valve covers and timing belt covers were given a clean up and buffed and then a respray with fresh clear coat. The fuel pump diaphragm was leaking on the motor, so I had a good replacement that was installed.
I have cleaned up and repainted the rotor assemblies with the Dupli Color gloss black engine enamel as shown earlier in the documentation of the work.

I have setup the frame in my spare workroom downstairs and just started by putting the front forks back on the triple trees. I changed out the old fluid with 10W fresh fork oil and stripped the old clear coat and buffed and recleared the lowers.

I have repainted all the caliper brackets and calipers and repaired the rear caliper which had a damaged outer case from something gouging metal off the domed area. I used the metal repair material as shown and sanded the caliper back to a stock appearance.
