Jonesz wrote:Jonesz, I like to play with the camera when time permits and its just a hobby. The counterpart to this is: hopefully through the photos, someone will be inspired by how great these old Honda's can look, and go on to try their hand at it. Sadly, many are phased out of the collector car/bike market by the sheer pricing, but with a little investment in time, money, and creativity, the rest of us can still have a whole lotta fun! The pics scattered throughout ngwclub.com and other venues clearly show how great each of these machines still are - even decades later! Thanks for all your positive comments!

Have enjoyed your pics and some inspiration seeped through.Last night (shortly after happy hour) full of liquid courage I purchased a black 78 although it is still 300 miles away. It is currently very cold here so I sent a deposit so the owner would hold it until the weather improves a bit. Got her for a parts bike price and although she has been sitting quietly in a shed covered with a half inch of dirt for the past 16 years there is great hope that the bike will someday have some likeness to yours. It will be a long project and really that's what it's all about isn't it. Good thing is there are two sets of plastics with it so I have some practice canvas for the colors and paint, but before any of that I will be doin a strip down to the frame, belts, carbs, fuel tank, battery etc etc. Hopefully she is not totally seized. No one knows as it hasn't run since 2002. I have attached a photo so you can judge the similarity to your bike. Are you thinking there is hope or not?$_59r.JPG

Hope? Absolutely! The biggie is the internal condition of the engine. Second to that, a real good cleaning and polishing can change the appearance of that bike fast- low cost really, elbow grease and time are all you need. Your plastics look pretty decent in the pics too. Should you decide to remove the baggage you'll see a GL-Slimfast emerge in no time. You're already approaching this as a long-term project and it's a bit of work along with commitment, but if you stick to it, you'll revive another hot little GoldWing and end up with a sweet bike! When the time comes, please start a thread on it. I found this site after mine was pretty much all done and missed that opportunity to share all of what came during that GL1000 facelift.

Thanx CrazyJerry. Was kind of sorry to horn in on your thread (thought about that after I did it) but couldn't resist showing you the comparison between my new project and the CrazyJerry bike that provided the incentive. It will be a while in the doing but hope to end up with a nice cafe style bike. As you say that set of plastics shown are good and I am going to keep them that way (in case I or any future owner ever want to go back to standard) but it comes with another complete set which are going the receive the Jerry style but not same colors! And will start a new thread before starting to record the process.

No problem at all! I just checked out the start of your new thread -
You will be strongly encouraged through your build!

5speed - thanks for the congrats and your bike will turn out as good as the next one! Each builder has to take their bike in a direction that suits them best. While all these bikes have certain similarities, it's that uniqueness from the builder which will set it apart, and those are the details the sharp eye will be looking for and lamenting over!

Good stuff CJ. Really good. I used to fancy myself a photographer. But, I found that you have to have real artistry deep in your soul to be effective. I don't.
You got it, dude.
Can't wait to see what you do with the Oklahoma custom. Please keep posting on that one.
- Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass. It's about learning to ride in the rain.
The weather is finally snow free (yes, last weekend was a white-out!) so it's time to revive this thread.
This GL1000 with a single Solex carburetor has performed very well and faithfully returned 42+ mpg. The bike shows well and has plenty of upgrades,... but there's one small item missing.....

A Supercharger!
It's been done before on a few other Goldwings, and it's a great idea, so I'll try my hand at it.

Here's a final photo before the transition:

I knew you had some plans, this will be interesting! Looking forward to the conversion.

J.R. Lusik did an awesome '78 supercharged with '75 shelter, custom spoked gold anodized wheels, etc. He showed it at WingDing 2018 in Knoxville. The sound of the blower spooling up behind me leaving stoplights was something I'll never forget (I got to ride just in front of him). It is an expensive project, and requires skill, experience, and a great shop. I believe he was fueling it with a Webber. I've yet to see a successful FI GL1000.

The first unexciting step is removal of the radiator and any shrouds/plastics. By default, there isn't going to be room for the supercharger so lots of trial fitting will be in order...

The little Solex clone (EMPI brand) was an excellent performer and fuel economy was great! The carburetor and manifold will go on the shelf in the event it's needed in the future for another project:

This winter was not a total loss. Cleaning and collecting all the right pieces for the supercharger installation chewed up lots of time but will make the conversion thread zip right along since that's all basically done.
-
The candidates are a vintage MagnaCharger and a Weber DGV!

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the target date for completion will be on or before July 4th... I don't think I can milk this thread out since installation will be very straightforward after any space modifications are addressed!
