Progress of restoration of 76

#1

Post by mjsinil »

Well after a very hot and humid July the weather has finally improved enough to get the 76 project started. Tear down started with removing seat, fuel tank, rear fender and front breaks which are frozen solid. Removed carbs for rebuild. Gave the whole thing a good cleaning which took a whole day to get 42 years go grime off. Installed new wiring harness and new starter. While I am waiting on carb kit I am going to replace timing belt, flush cooling system, change oil and freshen up drive train.

The 76 is a quick one. Have fun with the restoration!
How was the tank? Much rust, or did the elements leave it alone?
If it is rusty, there are so many ways to get it clean. But my favorite is the nuts and bolts, solvent and salsa dance method. I'm still pretty good with everything but the salsa dance, and it doesn't work as well holding the tank close in a slow waltz. SO, now I'm trying putting my velcro based sander onto the flat surfaces with velcro strips, putting in phosphoric acid and turning it on to do the shimmy shake for a while. I'll let you know if it works!
Goldwings don't accelerate, they gain inertia.

1978 GL1000 - almost stock - needs a head replaced, parts are ready to install!
1979 GL1000 - Winter project/parts bike - custom "Busted"
1983 GL1100 Standard- raised from the dead and back to organ donor status
And the newest acquisition, 1979 XS 650F to be a sidecar tug. crossy.gif

Tank was clean so I lucked out on that one. I have three left feet so the salsa dancing is an ugly site.

ah. good thig because you would be conducting "how to remove the gas tank from a vintage wing" seminars around the world if you removed it without taking the rear end off. lol

The 76 is going on slowly due to work and weather.
Finished carbs and reinstalled them. Everything seems to move much better now. The throttle actually turns and returns without using too much effort.
Replaced timing belts yesterday. Looked like original Honda belts were still on it.
Installed new handle bars which are lower and shorter, tracker type. So now I get to shorten all of the control cables and reroute the brake lines.
Went ahead a started cleaning the fuel tank, wasn't bad but wanted to make sure since I already had it out. The new battery charger wouldn't work so I put an old battery between the charger and the wires going to and inside the tank. It seems to be working great.
Now some more chrome polishing before I start rebuilding the brake calipers next week.

Back at it now that the weather has improved. I installed new Dyna coils and Dyna ignition. I set the timing as instructed. I got the light to come on just when the line hit the mark on both. I am getting fuel out the 1/3 side tail pipe and back fires but will not start. I checked and all four plugs have spark. suggestions? stuck float?
