Robin1731, member, contributor, guru here sells stainless steel replacement hex-head bolt kits that are all correctly sized to replace the JIS screws on the front cover.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I did inspect the water pump, and can see no evidence of impending failure. .
Just a slight warning. I also inspected one and it was tight and seemed fine. Ran the bike for 5 or 10 minutes and it started leaking pretty good out the weep hole. Just so you know. ;)

OK fine. I would certainly kick myself for not replacing the water pump now if there were problems in the next few hundred miles.

I do have a question. Partzilla has a good price at the moment. However they have several part numbers listed. Am I to assume they are all the same?

Well shoot.

I pulled the transmission cover this afternoon. There was a fair amount of sludge collected in there. When I started cleaning up the sludge I found a few chunks of... something. Doesn't look like metal.

Any ideas about what this is? Remember I have never seen/heard this bike running/driving.

Ugh.

That looks almost as bad as the one I took out of my 79 engine. I'm to the point that almost any wing I'm looking to buy gets the water pump replacement automatically figured in to the budget. I think sitting for any extended period is the worst thing for the pump.

The majority of the parts for the water pump job have shown up. However I have 2 questions.

What is the best way to remove all the old gasket material without damaging the surface?

Do I need to remove the oil pump cover to replace the oil seal?

No, you don't have to remove the oil pump, the seal goes between the oil pump housing and the rear of the water pump. For removing old gaskets, I typically spray them with PB Blaster or similar, let them soak a bit, then carefully scrape them off. I use a regular gasket scraper and just go easy with it. For tight spots, I took an old streak knife, cut the blade off about 2 inches from the handle, and shaped/ sharpened it to suit. YMMV...

Just found this thread. I have an 1100, so (slightly) different lay out, but with the engine out, would also take the rear cover off and check the clutch and stator, as well as the neutral switch, strainer and water pump as you have been advised.
Without seeing the engine run, if you have the same luck that I had when I started, whatever you do wont matter, something else will show up that no one mentioned, but that's all part of the 'fun'! At least you'll learn how to get the engine out, and it gets easier each time you do it!

1985 GL650 Silverwing another mistake, horrible bike
1986 CBX550 Good commuter

Well. The project stalled out as other things took precedent.

However it has continued to nag at the back of my mind. So I have been back in the garage working on (very slowly) putting things back together.

There is a lot to do!!

Part of the reason I have been inspired to get back to this project is that I just picked up a sidecar! This is going to be cool. I swear.
