Looking for a windshield for my naked 83

Post by Jonesz »

Trying to decide on a W/S that would be effective and also look good on my stripped 83 Aspy. I have narrowed things bit and am leaning toward a slipstreamer S-08-T like the attached pic. Anyone here use this one & how do you like it? Or maybe someone has another recommendation for a W/S that they have used/seen and liked.

this was on my 82 when I bought it. It was great at speed on the highway but for cruising back roads and traveling around town I just about cooked due to no breeze.
I took it off and I'm going to replace it with a National Cycle Street Shield EX.

That one looks really good 5speed but thinking you need the one for 7/8" bars(I see they are available) and wondering how the clamps that go on the forks will adapt. Hope you do this soon and let me know how you make out with the installation. It would look really cool on my 83.

I do..that was the first pic I found online. lol
I plan on ordering it this week. From the pics I've seen online..the fork mounts are hose clamps so that shouldn't be difficult.

I had the street shield on my Yamaha, and it worked ok, but I found the clamping system to be very poor. Unless they've changed the design, the hose clamp is light weight and narrow, and the plastic mount it goes through is too small to allow use of a better clamp. Just passing along my experience...

Cyborg I hear ya purchased a helmet with drop down shield and hoped to avoid the W/S but it seems my 70 plus year neck does not agree. A few rides in and it seems like I get so much pain in my neck for a few days after that most of the fun is taken out of my ride!

I agree. Serious riding, (highway etc) requires a windshield. I rode my 78 naked, (no windshield), til I had enough of the wind. (around 50 years old)

Neck pain can also be caused by the handlebars being too far away, causes you to lean forward then have to look up putting your neck and shoulders under strain. If the muscles in the back of your neck and upper shoulders are the ones feeling the pain then look to see how far you have to reach to get to the handlebars.

Yes, exactly. I had to play around with the shield some to get it at the angle I liked, and after 5 or 6 adjustments, the hose clamp just couldn't take it. IIRC, i ended up using some heavy duty zip ties instead...

I think John Schmidt also tried one on his '84 standard build and didn't like the mounts much...

humm.. I was looking at the forks last night and I'm wondering if I can make a mount that fastens to the bolt on the triple tree clamp.
I'll look at other windshields too. I'm not set on this one although I do like the shape.

well..I've been wasting time looking at windshields and..I think I will go with this one based on Track T 2411's feedback. it is strictly handle bar mount. My wife's shadow had a memphis shades windshield on it and the mounts are extremely well made.
It is 18" high..same as the National cycle one.

I like that one 5speed. Shape, size, tint and handlebar mount. I really want to buy something that looks good and is functional as opposed to jury rigging mounts etc. Where did you find it? Available in Canada? BTW appreciate the folks offering help on the handlebar location but the present set=up feels ok to me. Shoulders etc feel fine but have a hard time turning my neck the day after a long ride. I am putting some of the blame for that on age and a bit of arthritis in my neck joints!
