Conditioning the leather. leather conditioner, black shoe polish brushed in with a toothbrush, then heated with a lighter to seal in the wax/polish. A technique taken from an navy vet who used this for polishing their boots.

used the lighter after wiping residue off and before buffing it with a shoe brush and soft rag. this is round one. will let this soak into the leather overnight and repeat. the leather will soak up the polish due to the fact it is 40 years old and dry.

if you heat the polish up in the can and pour it on the leather it is easier to spread. you don't get chunks of polish all over the place. the polish is flammable, so don't be surprised when it flames up as it melts.

. Next part to work on if the gas tank. I made the mistake of not buying enough metal rescue. purchased 2 gallons. figure i could just rotate the tank on each side. chose to go cheap, now it is biting me in the butt. flash rust. must start over and buy the 5 gallons i needed the first time.

If metal rescue is water based you could likely just dump in some distilled h2o, top it up and mix now that you have it free of most rust (thinking the pics are before rather than after the metal rescue). I am thinking that the weakened solution will take care of flash rust but in any event you will likely have to fill with a fluid of some kind immediately on dumping the tank to prevent further flash problem. Just a thought. I have been wrong before!! If the pics of the tank are current then ya you'll likely have to do the whole thing over.

Ya, I wondered about that. Some have recovered theirs in leather. Always wondered how that held up in the rain
