1978 GL 1000 JUNK YARD DOG PROJECT
Picked up a 1978 GL 1000 in a salvage yard. also purchased 3 frames and 2 engines with many other GL parts. I have misc parts from 76-79 GL'S purchased off craigslist knowing I was going to restore a bike. . Broke down the bike and took the engine apart. My goal was to use this engine and my training engine. All internal engine parts are in great shape so i will get another case and begin to put the engine back together.
Mistake number 1. a rubber mallet is not as soft as you may think. Separating the engine broke off a small piece of the cover. Will find another one on Ebay. I did find that a plastic sheetrock spatula is soft and was vital in getting this engine apart. i used it as a wedge to slide down the seam as i slowly separate thee case. Did not help i left one bolt in the engine while trying to separate. Was not until I broke off the piece that I stepped back and retraced my steps. i thought it was stuck due to rust being in the junk yard for many years. . i was going to trash these pipes until i saw a youtube video. hit harbor freight got a few polishing wheels and they cam out pretty good.

Can't just throw your internals into another set of cases. Check the codes on the cases, crank, and rods to see which bearing you need. If you're lucky the codes on both sets of cases will be the same. Then you could just swap parts around.

having difficult time getting shift pin out of the engine. Heated it, cant get a grip on it with enough force to pull it out.

Hats off to you for "saving" a GL from the bone yard. Good luck with your project.

the rear is a simple swap, the front forks, calipers, and rotors are different 75-77 and 78-79. But if you have a set of earlier forks calipers and rotors they fit the triple trees. I believe the seals for the headlight ears are different as well.

I might add that the early triple trees (75 and part of 76) had ball bearings and if you replace with taper bearings they are a different size than later

low budget remod and learn new skills. Next week I will have photos of these chrome parts powder coated. I am using Eastwood Wet Black. i tried using VHT Roll Bar Paint over the chrome but it just ran off. Used a grinder on both parts as well as a brass wire wheel on each. After powder coating on side of the Spedo cover w/o primer. I needed to use primer on the other to hide most of the pitting.

images from my first powder coating project. The one i did not prime came out crappy. all other part had primer added to hide rust pitting. looks like i will have to strip[ and repaint. The other piece, i an sanding and will paint with VHT Roll Bar High Gloss Black.
