Rear ended

Post by Sandy »

So I'm stopped at the intersection, 3rd vehical back, waiting for the light to change.
Bike lurches forward from between my legs, What?
She banged right into the back, bent the fender and hit the tire, tire took the brunt I guess.
She was wipeing her eyes.
Get the bike back home without any problems and dismantled the rear end.
The curled fender popped right back into shape, pulled the rear wheel and brakes, do not see any damage.
Run the drive train up to speed to see if there is any visual defect.
Checked bearings and swing arm.
All looks good.
Any thoughts on hidden problems I could check.

Yep. Happened to me in 2011. Spoiled a perfectly good '85 ZL900 Eliminator. I was bummed (but unhurt). Bike was totalled.

Sounds like you have all the bases covered on things to check. If it tracks straight with no wobbles, you're probably fine.

...and I apologize for my seeming insensitivity to your condition. I just figured if you're looking at the bike, you must be OK. Sometimes, luck is on our side. Too many kids texting these days, for sure.

Ugh, same thing happened to me...twice!

First time was on my V-Strom. I watched the car pull up behind me and stop, then a few seconds later, I was jolted off the side of the road. The lady was retrieving something from the passenger side floorboard and inadvertently released pressure on the brake pedal :IDTS: The only damage was a bent license plate, fortunately.

Second time, I was two-up on the 'Wing in the rain. I stopped at a roundabout when I was suddenly shoved into the intersection. Fortunately, I kept the bike upright, and the oncoming driver was paying attention and could stop before he hit me, too. Seems the guy on the VTX1800 behind me had skidded on a paint line and slid into me (although, as hard as he hit, I think he also had his head up his...). My rear fender is a little cockeyed now, but the wheel and swingarm seem to be fine...and that was over a year ago.

I learned my lesson, though. They can't hit you if they can't catch you, so the faster you go, the safer you are :joker

Anyway, glad you're okay!

I bought an 83 aspen with a salvage title. looked good all round except for some cracked body work here and there. guy that sold it to me got it this way, didn't know reason for salvage title. I checked it all over, drove it, studied it, bought it. figured maybe dropped or slight accident caused enough cracked body work to warrant being totaled out by some ones insurance co. I detailed and repaired all bodywork, repainted, looks awesome, handles great. Then a couple years later I decided to detail and refurbish the rear wheel and break area. pulling the rear axle, I had to force out the axle shaft, thinking years of gunk or a little rust being the problem...Wrong. discovered swing arm ever so slightly bent. luckily, driving in the axle shaft with big hammer was enough to straighten it enough to keep bike feeling and handling properly. that's my lesson for future reference. Just say'n
